Discord prioritizes and only does 'features'. Its security thus far has been a joke. (see youtube videos, etc.)

and what to do
Other than not use Discord I guess. ..... make sure images do not auto play or embed, tune settings for security. Turn on developer mode, make sure you see the URL of every 'link'. Every embedded image, video, link you should be able to inspect. If you don't trust the link you can then copy and paste it into a security site to see if it is trustable or not, or ask here.

Do not link your accounts, use unique nicknames, do not let them know who you are elsewhere.
Do not fall for the I accidentally reported you scam or similar things, there are no steam mods on discord.
Do not feel threatened when they start saying stuff.
Do not feel upset when a narcissistic discord server mod got triggered and banned you for not seeing things the same way they do. (discord server mods are a meme for a reason)
Do not put discord on your phone. Do not let stuff/apps/google track you. Do not link your phone or phone number to discord. Privacy is also security.
Do not download weird files from discord, always scan them with anything. (just use virustotal)

No you are not. This will lessen a scammer's interest in you.

You can find all kinds of stuff on malwarebyte's blog and on youtube for examples. There is also the Steam FAQ, which warns about discord scams and stuff.

i know about security stuff , but i v heard so many bad things about discord , and i dont know all the tricks in the book
uhm... well... scammers are generally lazy and reuse the same tricks. They tend to adjust it only slightly.
but I mean if it stops working they will try something new.
and if they have enough money they upgrade to newer hacks or methods.

any tutos about how to make it safe
...... discord isn't secure, nor safe. Its CDN is filled with virusses and they delete nothing, so Discord is often used as Command and Control server to control virusses on people's pcs from. There is no way to make discord safe. Only discord can do that but they aren't, because they want results and customers, not waste time on security.

, or any tips
Use matrix for example instead. (The element client can be used over matrix, which is discord-like), signal (if you want most privacy),
Jami is more like skype, one-on-one based, but works. (secure)
Telegram isn't secure (by default) and requires user effort, so don't use that.
qTox maybe good, never tested that or inspected it to be honest, but its front page promises a lot.
Jitsi also looks interesting.
Anyway, yeah just don't use discord basically, use something more secure and privacy respecting instead.

Edit: you can google more; there are plenty of discord alternatives.

Anyway the point being, the only thing that protects you is 'you', especially on discord.
Make sure you anonymize yourself and scammers will at least keep their distance because they have no clue who you are.
As for virusses, just do whatever you can to not get infected. (keep in mind discord can be buggy. if you also use f.lux, it can crash your computer when watching youtube videos from within discord. This isn't a virus or hack, its just discord being discord.)

Another tip, if something happened (like you downloaded something or they send you a message) and you suddenly log off and discord wants you to login again; "Don't"
it means they send an update to the client on your pc.
if you log in at that moment, they will have your account details, so don't.
Make sure you pay attention to what discord does when using it.

Instead of logging in, close disord, scan your computer for virusses immediately. (and clear all temp files and reinstall discord)

Edit 2: also be careful with which servers you join. Some have bots that can try to hack your discord account the moment you enter. (You will notice this when discord suddenly closes and want you to login for example, after which again, you don't log in, instead scan your pc and reinstall discord.)
Popular servers often get invaded by stolen accounts and bots, which then send you DMs with pornographic images or some other nonsense; sometimes it includes a hack attempt or phishing attempt.
Block these users, report them, and make sure you do not click any link they send and if discord closes and wants you to login again, again 'don't log back in'. scan your pc and reinstall.

Edit 3: The most common way a user gets hacked or scammed (anyway) even if they follow these steps, is because their friend got hacked. Do not trust your friends; always try to test and make sure its still them before clicking on links they send. You otherwise might end up on a phishing website. Be careful

Just don't accept random invites to servers or click on random links sent to you about your account being locked, reported, etc.

And enable 2FA.
Wizardhermit Oct 11, 2022 @ 11:53am
Linking your Steam to Discord will make you a target for scams.

Just know ahead of time that no Steam employee will ever contact you via discord. If someone says anything about your account being reported or about to be locked etc they are trying to scam you.
atti Oct 11, 2022 @ 11:54am
On Discord, you'll receive a lot of scam links in some big servers so beware of that. If someone is posting about free discord nitro gift or giving away their steam inventory, that is most likely fake.

One thing to always note. Never scan any QR code to login on Discord, they can access your account without having your credentials.

Follow the advice in this thread and you should be fine.

I'll reiterate one thing. Nobody from any company other than discord will contact you unsolicitedly via discord ever. If someone claims to be from steam or any other company or law enforcement they are lying and trying to steal from you.
Beardface31 Oct 11, 2022 @ 2:34pm
The software itself is safe. Just be wary of scams.. maybe update yourself on common ones.

Discord itself is 'safe' in the sense that using Discord is fine

What you do outside of discord is the problem. This is no different than any other platform. The forums here, any social media platform, discord, etc. There are scammers everywhere. As such you should be vigilant to such scams on any platform you use.
Paratech2008 Oct 11, 2022 @ 7:19pm
Even if you wouldn't get scammed you might not want to be harassed continuously by scammers.

I don't see a "good" reason to tie Steam to Discord but that's your choice.
Mason Oct 12, 2022 @ 9:04am
Discord is complete and utter garbage, the only time I will ever use it is to talk to someone through voice chat. But screw "interacting" with people in servers, most servers are absolute cringe filled with 13 year olds posting minion memes or some trash like that. Just be careful what servers you join, as I said some of the people on Discord are absolute cringe. Don't forget about the whole Discord dating thing as well, which unfortunately you see a lot of. The whole damn platform is just god tier cringe, spare yourself.. don't bother with Discord. But if you for some reason still decide to use it, obviously it's safe to use, I would think with the millions of people using it daily they would've figured out if it's unsafe by now.
Oct 12, 2022 @ 2:16pm
it's safe as long you don't lick random links or join sketchy servers. good luck and have fun.
Bu3(SW) Oct 12, 2022 @ 2:19pm
Discord collects a ton of data from your PC.
Tsubame ⭐ Oct 12, 2022 @ 3:18pm
Is safe as long as you do accept randoms. I only use it when me and my friends have issues using Steam chat, which is not the best out there.

If you do talk with randoms, be smart and don't take everyone's word for granted - i.e. "Steam Staff".
Lunar Fang Oct 13, 2022 @ 1:40am
I think people covered this, but be careful with your information. No one who works for Steam or Discord will ask you for your login information, it's already in their hands. Never click any links, knew a guy who had his discord account hacked, they changed his name, and started spamming links to some website and then took his whole server down.
Canuck Oct 13, 2022 @ 4:42am
It's better then steam. A lot less Nazi community mods abusing powers. But like anything whether it's you're phone or email you have to use common sense when it comes to clicking on something or not.

In my personal opinion, discord is pretty safe as long you dont provide information about your steam account or other platforms.

If scammers don't know your info, they wont mess with you.

Also, free Discrod Nitrous is a scam 99.9% of the times, avoid people offering that.

Cheers
vinny Oct 13, 2022 @ 2:53pm
Discord itself is completely safe and is used by millions everyday. Since there are a bunch of users on the platform, you're bound to get spam links where people will attempt to scam you (depending on what servers you are in). Main thing to remember is not to click on dodgy links and don't trust people who you aren't friends with. Have fun!
