Nvidia C-Panel DSR setting causing some games to crash or zoom in

i have a 1080p monitor and prefer to run some games that dont have solid AA at 4K res via the DSR - Factors (Global Settins in Nvidia Control Panel) at 4x native resolution.

Although most of the time it works fine for these games to be supersampled at 4K on my 1080p screen, sometimes the games would either crash to my desktop and making my desktop look with tiny icons due to 4K, other times the game would simply zoom in like crazy and i would only see part of the image so i can't even go into settings to switch my res to 1080p.

Like I said most of the times it works no problem but sometimes randomly these crashes happen. Anyone experimented with this or know of a fix for this?

I have the latest video driver btw - runing a GTX 980 Ti. Appreciate your help :)

Btw i'm only doing the DSR 4K on less demanding games and they still run at 60+ fps so it's not that my GPU can't handle the performance.

Only times I've experienced crashes in games while using NVIDIA's Dynamic Super Resolution have been when I've taken multiple Steam screenshots in a row. I haven't tried DSR with the latest (WHQL 416.94) drivers on my GTX 970 though.

While the window size generally changes if you just put the resolution as 4K in-game, you could try seeing if behavior is any different should you first change your desktop resolution to 3840x2160 outside the game and then enter the game?

i actually tried changing my desktop res to 4K and all icons and text looks super tiny, it doesn't supersample like a game would. I actually want to just put it at 4K but can't figure out a way to have it supersample (keep the same image size just condense pixels for extra crispiness) rather than zoom out.
