How to corrupt a file
Hello, does anyone know how to corrupt a game file, so that the user has to install the game again.

I need it for my brother to stop playing the game. He has to attend classes but all he do is play and sleep.

Specifically (Dota2)

Please help, also don't bring a virus in my computer, i just want the file to be corrupted.

Remove , cut and paste elsewhere into a folder the " acf file " for that game, they are called appmanifest with a number that reprsents your game its located in steamapps.
The game will then appear as uninstalled. once you restart Steam. You can always put it back for yourself..
Open in notepad to see which game ie the one that matches your game.

Uh even if game data was corrupted it would just need to be repaired/reinstalled.
I'm not sure but I think that if you delete one or two file of the game he is not gonna be able to play correctly

What? The person could still literally just repair the game/ reinstall it.

If computer is yours, just password protect it or remove the power cable.

Even if you "corrupt" a file, it will take a few minutes to verify the game files and download the file that doesn't pass the verification. You can uninstall the game, then it'll take a little more time (depends on your internet connection) to download the whole game again.

Or just shut it down, remove the power cable and the battery if it's a laptop.

You have a mom and dad, ask them.
Those people are meant to have a thing called parenting skills. Use them.

If he is a gamer worth his/her salt, then "corrupting" the game's files is a pretty easy fix.

I suspect that this is a person of college age still living with your parents; if he/she does not want to abide by their rules - attend classes or get a job - then you might want to consider talking with your parents about conditions for him/her to stay at home.

Of course, if this is a high school minor, then it is time to plug the cable off the computer. :wink_eol:

You can corrupt pretty much any file by just editing it and changing a few bits...
Easiest way would be just open it with notepad and delete a bunch of stuff in the middle,
or you could just delete the original and replace it with a blank file with the same name and if you really want to make it a hassle you could change some of the file permissions to remove the read/write permission and then change the file owner to system - that way they would not even be able to open the file, delete it or anything and they can't change the permissions back because they don't own the file (they will have to change the owner of the file to themself, then re-add the read/write permissions)
