End of the day, it's their money to spend on what ever their choose. It may be a waste of money to the likes of me and you but to many people here, getting steam points is akin to getting achievements or steam level.

PS only a month ago, I took a look at the point shop and to my surprise I found I had over 3k in points for what ever reason. Not really spend money on steam for some time either. I have now spend some and still have 1.7k left.

No, points are not for sale but earned thru game purchase and awarded from the community when your content deserves merit. Steam supplies me with plenty of friends and game titles so those points are used for profile tuning and community awards.
