If you're looking for a singleplayer game firstmost, go with the Bioshock series.
Same goes for venturing into genres you hadn't thought about. Certainly if they're very cheap (Steam sales or on sites like Humble/Fanatical) it might be worth it to simply purchase one and see what's what.
Games are entertainment, so if you enjoy yourself, then it's good.
Yeah, that's called personal preference. Everyone has it.
And in bioshock you use genetically modified powers to beat up gene splicing junkies. Every game has weird nonsensical things in it. That's why they're games.
Bioshock has one of the best openings in gaming and an excellent premise. Although there are some nice graphical touches it's 90% about screaming maniacs coming out of the dark at you.
Bioshock 2 I think is underrated and provides far better use of the location from the first game.
Bioshock Infinite sets up in the first half hour what looks to be the most awesome and interesting RPG - and then spoils it by becoming another on rails shooter. Bioshock 2's combat is better.
Borderlands is far more open world. Yes, you're usually going around shooting things but there's lots of different things to shoot and the story and characters are a lot better than Bioshock's which is a shaggy dog story with a twist.
Borderlands 2 basically takes the first game to a whole new level.
And the Pre-Sequel, which is usually rated comparatively poorly, is reasonably good fun once you get used to its idiosyncracies. Definitely more platforming than either of its predecessors.
Given a choice - clear win Borderlands. Story, narrow win, NPCs - clear win, length of game, DLC, and multiplayer.
