Games like Myst and Quern?
I'm a big fan of puzzle adventure games like the Myst series and the newer Quern - Undying Thoughts. I've played Obduction, The Guest, The Room 1&2, and Decay The Mare, just to name a few. These are all games I really enjoyed, and would love to get recommendations for more like them.

Here are a few I've already put on my wishlist because they look promising:

  • The Eyes of Ara
  • Catyph: The Kunci Experiment
  • Ahnayro: The Dream World
  • RHEM IV: The Golden Fragments SE
  • Niko: Through The Dream
  • Odyssey - The Next Generation Science Game

Are there others you would recommend?
Do you have anything to say about the ones I've already listed?

Thanks for any feedback and suggestions!

Just discovered this and added to my wishlist: INFRA - http://store.steampowered.com/app/251110/INFRA.

I was gonna make this same suggestion ... I really enjoyed playing this game!

It may be hard to get a copy but the best game, after Myst, for me is:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lighthouse:_The_Dark_Being

The music alone makes my skin crawl!
Also this:

That game has some lovely real motion characters! :D
EDIT: Ohh I just checked when the post was made, made a fool of myself! ;P

Don't feel foolish about that haha, I'm still subscribed to this thread, as I'm sure others are. I'm glad people like you are still posting new games for us to check out. :)

+1 for Lighthouse: The Dark Being it's easily one of the best and most difficult puzzle games ever made. It works great on dosbox and is not hard to find.

There's been a lot of great mentions in this thread. Good puzzle games are hard to find, and few and far between. I'll add a few that may not be strictly puzzle but were enjoyable for me the same way Myst/Riven and Quern were:

King's Quest V
Penumbra
Amnesia
Limbo
Antichamber
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Yeah, I'm gonna have to give a big "NO" to Penumbra. I tried that game 10 years ago and quit because it autosaved me in an inescapable death trap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfFO12Ch9fM). For that reason I'll likely never bother with it again.

The Room series
I already mentioned The Room in my original post, but it's worth bringing up again because since then we've had The Room 3, 4, and VR (all of which I played and loved!!)

This is a great thread. I like these types of games from time to time.

I know a rare one. It's super simple graphics but super fun once you get it.

Thanks guys! Although, I did already say I played Obduction and The Room 1&2.

I have Syberia, and I think I tried it a long time ago, but didn't really get into it. I think I prefer the first person perspective. Maybe I'll give it another try though.

As for The Talos Principle and The Witness, let me explain a little bit more. I was in a bit of a rush with my previous reply. One of the things I love about games like Myst, Quern, Obduction, etc... is how they have a variety of puzzle elements that blend so organically into the world and the environment. The Witness ended up boring me very quickly because it lacked that variety and simply felt like the same puzzles over and over with slightly new mechanics added as you progressed. The environment was beautiful but the puzzles felt very detached, like doing sudoku on a beautiful island.... and just didn't do it for me at all. The Talos Principle is great but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the same category as Myst. It's much more like Portal. You generally get the same set of puzzle elements and tools are solve individual puzzles one by one, each with its own arrangement of those same elements.

I hope my feedback doesn't give the impression I don't appreciate the suggestions. I certainly do! ...and keep them coming, please.

I posted this because I was wondering if perhaps there's some hidden gem out there that's a bit more obscure than these more popular titles we've covered so far.
It seems that we have similar taste. i just bought "the Witness" due to great reviews but got the same feeling as you. similar kind of puzzles that doesnt seem to organically interact with the surroundings. I guess this post got a lot of sugestions but im afraid not all are trully Myst like (or Obduction, quern, etc). it would be great to have a list of the trully myst like games.
cheers

hey surprise !!!, if it hasnt been quote yet /

THIS is probably the best "myst like" ( good one , but too hard for me )
same gameplay , mechanics and so on ...

https://store.steampowered.com/app/512790/Quern__Penses_Immortelles/

this one is really made for advanced player i guess ,free to go where u want/can
until u unlock a new path etc.....
i "almost "completed some of myst games ( without any u tube vid xd ) but most of puzzles here are just too complex for me ( actually i think it s on same level than myst games puzzles )

hf

Thanks but that's literally one of the first games I mentioned in my original post :D:

No worries though, haha

Now that some time has passed I have more games to add to this thread.

The House of Da Vinci is now on their third in the series:

Scratches Director's Cut is presented as more of a horror game than a puzzle adventure (think Dark Fall), but it does have some interesting puzzles that can definitely "scratch" that Myst-y itch, so it's worth mentioning. I do have to warn that it can be a bit janky, and some elements are a bit nonsensical, but I don't regret playing it.

In case the game info box isn't loading above: steampowered.com/app/46460/Scratches__Directors_Cut

Gordian Rooms is worth mentioning. I haven't played the full game yet (it's stacked on my backlog mountain), but I played the prologue and it was quite promising. At time of writing it looks like there's also a sequel scheduled for Q1 2023.

The Five Cores Remastered is a very wonky puzzle adventure game. The controls are awkward and the graphics are dated. However, at its "core" it absolutely is a Myst-like and probably shouldn't be overlooked.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1002410/The_Five_Cores_Remastered/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1

Zof is an interesting beast. Unlike games like Myst and Quern, Zof doesn't really have any story or plot to follow. However, like Myst and Quern, it does have a vast array of varying puzzles, and even different "worlds" that you travel to (similar to Ages in Myst) from a central hub island, and each new challenge is unique so it isn't like you're doing the same kind of thing over and over (a la The Witness).

There have also been a multitude of "Escape Room" games that have been popping up over the last couple of years. Many of them are quite good, but they tend to be shorter, more contained experiences and also I'm a bit lazy and don't want to attempt listing them all here. I may come back with suggestions on a few that I've actually played, but we'll see.
