Muv-Luv is toast: And you should be offended
The greatest visual novel of our age, the epic trilogy - Muv-Luv - and its two continuations, have been culled from the steam library. You can't buy it.

This represents a problem, and you should be offended.

To call Muv-Luv an "eroge" or an "erotic game" would be a gross mislabeling. Muv-Luv is an epic romantic drama that touches on aspects of romance, war, daily life and tragedy in ways that most visual novels can't hope to ever touch. Muv-Luv sat at the #1 spot on VNDB for the longest time. It has every right to be called a work of art for its gripping, powerful narrative.

But Muv-Luv has been slighted. The presence of nudity in Muv-Luv has been an endless problem for this amazing piece of art. And I ask, why? Why is nudity such a problem for this one game? Not for any others, but just this one?

Muv-Luv had to patch the nudity out and offer the patch via a separate website.

Then they were required not to link to the patch officially.

And now they have simply been removed. The game is no longer sold on Steam.

It's time to pick up pitchforks, people. it's time to start calling out misappropriation and discrimination for what it is. Do we want to protect our art, or don't we?

Why is it, that the Witcher 3 can have full frontal nudity and sex scenes, and nobody says or does anything?

Why is it that SakuraGame can vomit up pointless, bland, CG-only Porngames without an ounce of story or meaning, to the point that you can find the uncensored versions of the CG just sitting in the screenshots - and never even see a slap on the wrist?

Why do we have to deal with 2-dollar cash grabs of such terrible quality, AAA game companies can do whatever the hell they want with no repercussions, and the things that really SHOULD be getting the respect they absolutely deserve are getting this kind of discrimination?

If you want Steam to keep its fingers out - if you want them to stop playing favorites - if you don't want Big Brother telling you which games you can play and which you aren't allowed - then it's time to speak up.

Now.
Right now. If you wait a week, you will be too late. Muv-Luv just got pulled. It's time, right now, to tell them that is NOT okay.

... after using a VERY roundabout method, I found my way to the Muv-Luv discussion forums which are still up (They can't legally take copies of the game away from the people who own it)

This is apparently just an "error" that will be fixed within the week.
From the 13th. Clock's ticking, it's been 3 days now.

I still don't approve of the double standards. I don't approve of the unnecessary restrictions and I REALLY don't approve of some developers getting a handwave simply because they are more mainstream than others, or it would be "too difficult to censor".

But if they just fix the error and restore the game so I can buy it when I want, then I guess I will at least put the torch out.

I'm keeping the pitchfork.

I've been wanting to play this game for a while due to the reviews however now that it's off steam there is literally no where to get the damn thing, even their website diverts directly to steam. -.-''

They had better hurry up. I want to buy my copy on the 20th.

I can only theories to the why and what the "error" could be. But they are breaking the steam rules that steam Starting to enforce last year. The dev's are not to mention or direct towards H-patches and not giving guides to how to obtain or install them.

If this is the reason it will be solved in some way.
I do not going to talk about or value content regarding Adult material, to what game's can or can't show. This part was enforced and that's steam's choice.

If anyone else need a fast way to look into the game forum.
Good less smut on steam the better. I hope it never returns.

I understand the "less smut" belief, I suppose. In my opinion the "Don't ask, don't link, don't tell" approach steam has taken is absolutely defunct. I don't necessarily agree they should not be listed, but they should be treated very differently.

And I think you are misinformed.

As for Muv-Luv, if you came for the "smut", you are playing for a weak reason. Alternative is a 50-hour tearjerker of a read, and you get 2 H scenes from the entire thing.

Also... while I'm on the topic...

I want to call out the differences between "Old-Style traditional" H games, that embrace the route system like Seasons of the Sakura, and "Modern" Skin games, like most of what Sakuragame churns out. The name's a bit ironic, actually.

I am going to classify all the games that follow SotS format as "Adult Romance" and the others as "Eroge" because that's basically the long and short of the difference.

There are plenty of games out there where the bulk of the entertainment is forming relationships with people, learning about others, reading stories of complication and connection, seeing others endure trials and find resolution, and being a part of that. It is simply a different type of fantasy, and in many of these Romance games, sex happens to come up. That's what makes it Adult Romance - the presence of sex and nudity - but really, you play games like Season of the Sakura because it's fun to experience the stories.

Then there's the modern, proper "Eroge" where the fanservice starts early and never stops. The entertainment here isn't reading a story about other people and their hearts and minds and paths through life. The entertainment is looking at naked tiddies.

I'm not going to preach and say that one is absolutely better than the other. I have an enlightened view of gaming - entertainment is what it is. If you think it's purile to fantasize about taking women's clothing off, I would say it's purile to fantasize about shooting strangers in the head and running them down in cars. I happen to find random violence a lot more offensive than random sexuality.

They are both escapes from reality. Fantasy-driven entertainment.

Adult Romance is not Eroge. Romantic involvement fantasy stretches way past Eye Candy fantasy. Dream Daddy Simulator falls into category 1. Dead or Alive Xtreme falls into category 2. Neither have any strict nudity.

Just food for thought.
