greedy people ruined those events by making countless accounts and farming the rewards, so valve changed how events work now, you can thank the greedy schlubs

You also get free trading cards, which you can craft for badges and xp, sell or gem and craft into booster packs.

Every single Steam sale, there's always someone complaining that the free stuff isn't free enough and the discounts are discounted enough. There was a guy complaining in multiple threads about how crappy the sales are and 50+ games on his wishlist were on sale for 90% off. You just can't please some people.
