For me, this 'triumvirate' of classics shares the honor to this day:

Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Half Life

Minecraft, good enough microsoft paid 2.5 billion to own it. And it spawned voxel like games such as 7-days, space engineers, ect. And led to terraria and terraria likes.

Also being used to push crossplay between consoles and pc.

but if i had to say a modren game witcher 3 is great there is hours of things to do and then theres the main story and also the art and soundtrack are wonderful

Of the old games, I'd name Master of Magic, the already mentioned Ultima Underworld (and the regular Ultima series as well), and the first Civ. DOOM should probably get a mention, and Planescape Torment for the writing.

Of more modern games (2000 and later), I'd pick Borderlands 2. I have not enjoyed another game as much, though there were others I played more (World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, Path of Exile).
