What's your definition of "gamer"?
I started gaming when I was 6 probably with roller coaster tycoon as my first game ever. Then when I was 8 my cousin introduced me to runescape, eventually maplestory, countless other online games mmo/rpg and I was hooked. I've played a lot, of many varieties of games, solely on PC, definitely a lot on steam. I have a maxed RS3 account which I know is not very impressive now a days but hey childhood dream fulfilled, stashed away for reminiscing. I definitely consider myself a gamer.

Today I was talking to my friend and next thing you know he's like oh yea you're not a gamer. I was so offended. I was like wtf is a gamer to you then. He said a gamer must play competitively. I'm salty guys.

So what do you consider as a gamer? People who do candy crush / phone gaming? casual only? competitive only? pin ball machine-ing? virtual chat worlds? choose your stories? people who have those custom set ups? club penguin? cookie clicker?

Sidenote: the term "gamer" is that it is, these days, incredibly broad.

Being a "gamer" doesn't actually mean all that much socially -- since there are so many types of videogames as well as so many different people playing them, and any two "gamers" aren't necessarily going to be able to talk much about their hobby to each other (imagine someone who's intiminately familiar with MMORPGs and big-budget JRPGs trying to talk to someone who pretty much only plays 2D indie metroidvanias and challenge platformers).
- eh... same could be said almost about any hobbie/recreation, really. Books, movies, comics etc etc etc. In that case only wery narrow hobbies/recreational preferences would matter like for example mountaineering, serfing, skating, woodwork etc etc etc. Things that require some skills and substancial offwork time and moneys investment. A things that could be hard to come by.

Well let's see I've been playing games since "Pong" was a stand alone console game about the size of a VCR. I owned Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, Colecovision, Intellivision, Tandy 1000, Commodore 64, Apple/Mac, Playstation 1 and 2. I pumped literally thousands of dollars in quarters into every arcade game there was during the 80's, and i built a computer system last year that proves gamer geeks should not have a credit limit. I beta tested Starsiege Tribes, Unreal Tournament 2004, and many many more, but I have never ever played competition unless you consider online FPS to be "competition", but never professionally. So by your friends definition, after 40 years of gaming i'm not a real gamer.

I think i have to disagree with that definition. :steammocking:

A person who plays video games as a hobby. It doesn't matter what kinda game it is.... as long as it's a game and they enjoy doing it as a recreational activity then you're a gamer.

But there is a difference between a casual and hardcore gamer though.

Anyone who plays video games on their free time for entertainment. But the industry has been trying to define what a "gamer" is for marketing reasons. The claim is that mobile gaming is dominating and that its mostly females gaming these days, based on the sheer numbers thats true, so they try to define anyone as a gamer. But honestly a mobile "gamer" isnt much of a gamer rather a casual time waster, in my opinion.

With games like FTL, Xcom: Enemy Within, Rome: Total War, KOTOR and Grid Autosport available on a phone, I wouldn't say it's always casual.

I know I had a lot of fun playing the Shadowrun games (Return and Dragonfall) on my mobile and iPad.

Does anyone remember that cringey “You call yourself a pro? S my D!” Razer ad? They honestly think that “gamers” are like that. Even the corporations that sell us products view us as some sub level petty rage machines. Hahahahaha

- well... alot of those are late ports from other platforms. And harebrained Shadowruns are exactly what it is - a mobilephone trash.:tank: Kitty is right, for majority of people who play exclusively on mobilephones its just a way to waste time, not a real hobby or preffered passtime.

And frankly speaking, that's how a number of us got started as console and PC gamers, too -- just a way to waste time -- it was just another fun toy that we had access to as kids, and we didn't think too hard about it.

- keyword is started.:HappyMask: I think majority of people who play exclusively to waste time would not even describe themselves as gamers. So again, by your definition either everyone would be a gamer or no one at all would the one.

Note that I didn't state a definition; you probably think I'm implying one because you're thinking that I'm talking in a certain direction...while I actually stated my definition in an earlier post.

I agree that these people wouldn't call themselves gamers at this point in their lives. However, I'm just noting that a good number of them may end up doing so later in their lives, likely more than those people who aren't playing games of some sort in this capacity, so it's not entirely wrong for people (e.g. marketing folks) to surmise that they might be the gamers of tomorrow.
