Turn based strategy game with hundreds of characters and mecha of different Gundam series.
You basically play through a abridged version of the story of different series with a dream team of Mecha and character you can train and modify.
Here is a review of the Switch version, maybe its something you may like.

Also "The Last Remnant" was removed about a year ago because the Steam license expired and Square Enix released a remaster for PS4.
But the Euro Square Enix store still sells the pc version:

10 Euro.
As for a turn-based mech games with any meaningful kind of customization, I can only think of Front Mission but that is not available for the PC. The only game that came close to it is Dual Gear but is not release yet.

Very true. Suikoden is a unique gem of a game, but i'm not looking for an exact copy to play while I dig out my Playstation. I would just like a game that has a healthy supply of playable characters.
It also appears that PC is not the place for these games, so my next question is "Is the PS4 or Switch a better platform to find such games?"
Honestly, no. Most JRPG and such that are on console also are on PC nowadays.
And Suikoden was very unique with the large pool of recruitable characters.
Sadly Konami has pretty much left the series to die so the last main game in the franchise, Suikoden 5 was on PS2.
Honestly, the only other JRPG i can think of that had a huge cast of recruitable party members ( like 45 or so) was Chrono Cross on the PSOne. And thats also very old.
Apart from that its mostly SRPG that have huge character pools, games like "Fire Emblem" or the "Disgaea" series.

The Switch is more know for it's JRPG than PS4. Sony used to be the King of JRPG but that was during the PS1 era. Also many games remain exclusive and stay exclusive especially on Nintendo/Switch.
Maybe have a look at Fire Emblem Series. There is always a Bazillion of characters to recruit in Fire Emblem Series. The newest Fire Emblem on switch is Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Have a look and see if that is your thing.
The next JRPG I know with lots of character to recruit is Rune Factory 4 but that is not turn-based but rather action. Also available on Nintendo Switch. So check it out too if you haven't.
And lastly Daemon X Machina for your mecha fix. It has a lot of pilot to recruit. Plenty of mech customization. Just that it is an action RPG and not turn-based. Available on Nintendo Switch exclusively. Check that out too if you don't mind action game.
Doesn't that have like 6 characters? Plenty of games with that... although, I admit, the poster didn't put a number on his "many" requirement.
As an example, Neptunia VII gives you 16 characters, without DLC characters (unless I have miscounted), but it takes a while for everyone to come together, and they'll split a lot too to deal with things.
But, somebody mentioned a game with more than a hundred characters, and 16 didn't seem a lot in comparison, especially since you rarely get access to all of them at once -- that's more of an endgame thing.
Sword Art Online series -
Tales Series -

To date, I've only played "Tales of Berseria". Which has a cast of 6 characters, 0 mechs, and is not turn based...
Turn based wasn't required, and the definition of a large cast of characters is up for interpretation. Compared to RPG's with 1 char then 6 would be a lot.
Also Tales of Vesperia for instance has 8 which is almost the same as xenogears 9, so pretty close. I think Tales of Symphonia had 11 which is more then xenogears. So it varies, hence why I named the franchise.
As you yourself said the poster didn't quantify a minimum number. So better to know your options and then let him look thru the various games then not mention one because of the vagueness of what constitutes a "healthy supply" of charachters.
I would call complete BS on that, the switch has a small selection of exclusives but nowhere near as many as the PS4. There are some great JRPG's on both, but PS4 has FAR more titles then switch
The playstation has ALWAYS been the strongest console in terms of JRPG's.
List 5 exclusive JRPG's for the switch then. They have some gems that's for sure, but most of their lineup is available on other platforms compared to many ps4 JRPG's ONLY available on PS4.
I mean some off the top of my head for PS4
Persona 5
Ni No Kuni II
Odin Sphere: series
Kingdom Hearts
Atelier series
Star Ocean Series
The Legend of Heroes Series
I could list far more that are exclusive between the switch and PS4 that are also available on PC for instance, but there are far far far more high quality JRPG games on PS4 then switch (even if they are also available on PC)
Ni No Kuni 2 - available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows
Atelier Series - not all are exclusive and most is on Nintendo Switch.
Star Ocean - not all is exclusive, Star Ocean First Departure R is also on Switch.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III - just announced for the switch
Don't you see the pattern. More and more once exclusive JRPGs are being made available on the Switch. I am not even saying the PS4 was never king of JRPG, maybe it was once king when it came out. But RIGHT NOW it is nearing it's end of it's lifespan and I understand why developers are switching to the Switch as it is the hottest selling consoles RIGHT NOW.
==>TO THE OP
And lastly to the OP, most of us or maybe just me, can only guess roughly what you are looking for with what you have told thus far. From what I can gather, you are looking for two kinds of game.
First game requirement, a game with lots of playable characters and an excellent story thus like Suikoden. You also said "a healthy supply of characters" so IMO 12 and above would be just right. Anything below would be no different than a Final Fantasy Clone which you wouldn't want and to be stuck with those Square Enix supermodels for a whoopin 60 hours would be a torture.
Second game requirement, a game with excellent mech themed story that involves mech as it's main component of gameplay. This for me is harder to find as mech is a very niche category that is rarely made nowadays let alone a game with mixture of JRPG and mech mechanics.
So my final recommendation before I fade into the shadows.

8 main characters to choose from. Each with their own story and starting point. Up to 20 characters to recruit and they are not brainless Pokemons that randomly just ambush you out of some grass which you can endlessly capture with a pokeball. Each with their own story and quests. But be warned, this game is not going to be easy and there will be no hand holding.
Again check it out if it's for you. And lastly I hope you find what you are looking for.
