Good space combat sim with single player story

I'm looking for a decent space combat game with a good single player experience. Not that "explore and trade" stuff, but tough combat missions and a progressing story. And yeah, no multiplayer shooters either.

Is there any newer game which is like this? All I can find are some exploring games like No Mans Sky or trading games such as Elite, where there are no missions but only random events.

The best series thus far has been the ancient X-Wing and TIE Fighter games from Lucasarts, where you had scripted missions and wingmen and the story progressed along the way. Babylon 5 - I've found her had some promise, but that was years ago. Independence War was even farther than that, but also something I enjoyed. Surely there's gotta be something like this with a modern game engine?

Should I give Everspace a chance, or is there anything with a better story?

Thank you Ogami. I will look these up. It seems that the HotDS is very close relative to the good ol' space sims, so I think I'll go with that for now :)

I wish we would get a new Wing Commander or something like that, just with a modern engine.
Those games were such fun in the 90s. But sadly space combat games seem to be a dying genre, at least ones with a story and linear progression. Everything is "sandbox", "open universe", "explore and trade" and so on.
I mean i LOVE those kind of games but a cool big budget combat sim with a storyline to follow would be cool again.

Look for Freelancer at a game store, awesome single player story open space Sim. There are still real good mp servers still going as well.

Everspace might meet your needs but I had to refund it if only because the HOTAS support is sketchy. Couldnt play it without personally.
