Eternal Senia

Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls <-- still being actively maintained, and the dev is pretty cool to hang out with on his/her discord.

Saira <-- originally paid (like $10), went free a few years ago.
The escapists. Really fun game that you can sink hundreds of hours into thanks to the workshop support
this thread went "not free" real fast. like 5 free sugestions then all paid games, thats not what the OP was asking for.

missed "free". my bad. anyway most of them cost nothing.
A few more suggestions for free games:

Team Fortress 2. Unless your computer is an absolute potato, this game should be able to run at least semi-competently on low settings. It's pretty well-optimized, I think.

Narcissu - a freeware visual novel. actually two in one. it's about hospital patients with terminal illnesses. no sexual content. may be feelsy.

Sunrider - another freeware visual novel x turn-based strategy game. has dating sim elements.

That's what I can think of for games on Steam.

Oh shoot, I also forgot another two:

Yume Nikki - a classic horror/surrealism indie game. wasn't on Steam for many years, but now is. But it's always been free.

Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt - basically a top-down action game. Pretty simple, relatively short, but quite fun. Made by the same dev as Iji (see below).

For games off Steam...

Now this list is gonna consist of games that are mainly from the last decade. I don't really specifically keep up with the freeware gaming scene. But on the other hand, these are pretty much guaranteed to run on even a really old computer. We're talking a laptop I once had, which I bought in 2003.

Cave Story - the indie game that put indie games on the map. There's a paid version with higher-res graphics on Steam, but the free version is still available, and it is a very well-polished work -- surprisingly intense storytelling, multiple endings, a very fitting and memorable soundtrack, a variety of gameplay choices in the weapons you can find, and so on.

Iji - a dystopian sci-fi platformer, and one in which choices -- regarding how you respond to warring alien groups that happen to have brought their war to Earth -- matter a lot, with considerable impacts on the story. Lots of character build options, too -- invest in hacking ability, or kick strength, or weapons expertise with the two warring sides' technology. May leave you with some philosophical musings on the nature of war.

Guardian of Paradise - a top-down action game, sorta vaguely similar to the Zelda top-down games. I played it a while ago so I don't remember too much about it but I do remember liking it, and that it's of solid quality. You'll need a translation but that should be easy to find.

La-Mulana - like Cave Story, this game also has a paid version on Steam, but the freeware version is still out there. The two versions are actually noticeably different -- a lot of the puzzles and even some of the boss fights in the game were changed when making the updated version (along with the graphics), so you won't have to worry about spoiling yourself for the other version. The only qualm is that you might need a guide to get through this game -- because otherwise you'll be dealing with brain-teasing clues all day long. The updated version is a little better with this. (Also, if you're a fan of the MSX computer system, you'll absolutely love this homage.)

the classic roguelikes - Rogue, Hack, Nethack, Angband, etc.. These games are best known for having very low-tech graphics -- generally they're designed to work with ASCII characters representing everything in the game, in a terminal window, it's almost literally working with no graphical user interface (unless you count the text-based GUI as one). Yet they do have an immense depth of gameplay. I'm not familiar with most of them, but I am familiar with Nethack, and there's an active player community that still plays this game, and they're quite friendly. Someone runs a server where you can play without even downloading the game, and where you can also share messages and bones files with other players, and get lots of guidance on the game -- you'll need it to survive, since the game is brutally difficult, albeit sometimes intricately and hilariously so, because such games are almost the poster-children for "the devteam thinks of everything". (Remember to include "greased" when wishing for that dragon scale mail!)

Spelunky - another game that has a paid release, but has a free predecessor. The freeware predecessor is actually somewhat different, gameplay-wise -- not just lacking features, but having noticeably different gameplay dynamics. Shopkeepers were easier to kill, which meant that certain strategies are a lot more fun. I'm personally guilty of starting the game at least some 5000 times -- since each attempt, which I'd often embellish with absurd risk-taking because it's hilarious and fun, generally took less than ten minutes (sometimes less than three) before I'd die, then I'd restart. And every time, the dungeon would be different so it'd be fresh, but it'd be similar enough that the skills I learned made the game really fun. And the unpredictable nature of things, plus the few bugs the game had (especially version 0.99.9, which I prefer the most), made for some...very interesting experiences. (Remember that it is possible to be crushed to death by a gold block in the City of Gold, especially if you've scrolled it off the top of the screen and then forgot about it.)

Knytt Stories - this is actually not one game, but more like, a meta-game "engine" of some sort. It's a framework which allows people to design custom worlds that all use some of the same set of mechanics, where a character goes around exploring a metroidvania-style world, gathering abilities to explore further. The dev (who also made other freeware games of this sort, like Seiklus and Within a Deep Forest, as well as Saira, which I mentioned above, and some paid games too like Knytt Underground) made a few such worlds, but users have contributed a huge number of their own levels, from artsy philosophical levels to challenge levels to...whatever "Don't Eat The Mushroom" is.

5 Days a Stranger - the first entry in the Chzo Mythos series, by Yahtzee (most famous for his Zero Punctuation series). A horror point-and-click game. Genuinely scary, and quite well-designed -- you wouldn't expect that from a game that uses MIDI music, even. But oh goodness it does its thing very effectively.

Mega Man Unlimited - a Mega Man fangame, and probably the best of the bunch -- certainly one of the most polished ones. The game is a little bit on the hard side, as far as Mega Man games go, but the game is quite rewarding, and amazingly, it actually has a meaningful story, one that ties the classic and X series together. (Don't forget to wait for the bonus dungeon!)

Street Fighter x Mega Man - another Mega Man fangame, and this one is actually officially endorsed by Capcom. The Street Fighter cast is reimagined as Mega Man style Robot Masters, and Mega Man gains some of their signature abilities from defeating them. A fun shout-out to both franchises.
