Like already said, its open source and it has a very active community which created countless maps and story campaigns for it. Apart from the inbuild campaigns that will already keep you busy for many hours. It also very performance friendly and runs on pretty much anything.
Not on Steam but you did not say if that was a requirement.

the Shadowrun series is more text based and strategy, hope you like reading a LOT.
you can also try Bahamut Lagoon on the snes (it a lot like Shining Force where you move dudes and dragon on a grid)
one of my favorite is Steamworld Heist, turn based shooting game.
in the vein of old Dragon Warrior, you may like Chtulu Save the world, battle are similar but with some new elements like enemies get stronger at each turn so you must find a way to finish fight quickly and random encounter are limited/dungeon so once you get finished the 25 battle per area you can explorer without being disturbed or provoke fight at will if you wish, story is kinda funny and you unlock another quest when you finish it.
