Steam Community Market security restrictions are annoying and pointless.
So I wanted to pre-order FM 2020 for a discounted price, and I realized that I have a couple CS:GO skins in my inventory that I could sell to get the game without having to pay any more real-life money...
1. I try selling them, but for some reason, I have to have bought a game at least 7 days ago but less than a year ago...?? This makes absolutely no sense, has nothing to do with what I'm trying to do, and I'm even struggling to think of a single hypothetic situation in which this would help anyone. Whatever. I'll buy a cheap game and wait for another week...
2. So I wait a week and get really excited because now I can FINALLY play this game I've been waiting for for a while, BUT I STILL CAN'T SELL MY ITEMS. I either have to wait 15 days or activate the Steam Guard Authenticator for 7 days... UGH. I just lost that discount opportunity because by the time I sell my items, the pre-order period will be over and the full game--at full price--will be out.
This is ridiculous. Neither of these restrictions makes any sense. Steam needs to understand that not all their users need to have their hand held in order to not get their account compromised. These are my items. Let me sell them in order to BUY A GAME FROM STEAM. (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming they're not doing this on purpose to make me pay more...)
Please at least give us the option to get rid of these and admit it's our responsibility if anything happens. We just want to do what we joined Steam for; play our favorite games
Please fix, Steam <3

If there were 77000 car accidents on the autobahn every month, I don't think anyone would dare use it for long. Maybe the same thing would happen to Steam if they didn't do what they did.

I'm one for more options and "power" to the consumer. A cooperation always go second in my book but sometimes I, as a consumer, can give up a little to gain a little. This might be a slippery slope and in the end I might have given away all I had while the cooperation still had more.

All I can do is to make good decisions in my life, and hope that other people think the same. We live in a world were 1000 people complaining isn't even registrating in any significant way. This is what scares me the most.

Thank you. Your viewpoint is the most sane response I've seen.

(Edit: though I really disapprove of the fallback to the Autobahn again :D)

"Freedom to not use the system" is not an option – unless you find someone paying me back for the value of my games.
Then live with how the system works, nobody is going to pay you anything back, it's money you willingly invested, despite all the changes in over 15 years of Steam service, so you either accept or move on,

Oh btw.. we decided to change the mortgage on your house afterwards because in the loan contract we have a paragraph "These conditions may be altered at any point for any reason by the loan provider" and we decided that you have to pay us 20% interest per year from now on. What you don't like that? Well you can always just give us your collateral a.k.a. your house to terminate the contract.

I hope you realize how stupid (and illegal) this situation would be and I hope you see the connection to Steam changing without an offer of compensation. Ofc it is an exagerrated example, but the principle is the same.

Edit: Or maybe a better suited example: Oh, you don't like the new policies for Apps in the AppStore? Well nobody FORCES you to use our products; If you disagree, you can always choose to use a different service provider. Oh what's that? You have your phone, pc, watch, toaster and fridge all connected? You have hundreds of dollars spent on apps that specifically only run on our OS? Well.. bummer.. but I guess there's nothing we can do for you. Just accept our agreements and everything will be handy-dandy. Trust us. We "Do no evil". (Yes; That is a crossover of google and apple)

Yeah, responding with hyperbole is a great way to argue.

Well you have to make that choice, do your beliefs and convictions outweigh your investment? Regardless, despite what you think you're not owed service on your terms. Services change and evolve over time, and either you can live with those changes or you can't.

I've just seen this exact same formula of a topic hundreds of times over. Some user doesn't like a thing and thinks their customer history gives them a say in how the company operates. True, if the company angers a majority of their customers and drives them away you'd have something there. But this is just you and a pretty small minority of users as far as I know. The market policies have existed for years and it hasn't driven users off Steam. So... you may not like it, but the issue seems settled. And you can't argue people into caring about your issues that don't hurt them. Analogies and hypotheticals can help people see your point of view, but not move them to action or to support your cause.

Not yet – it is a minor inconvenience; Youtube has added a lot of those minor inconveniences over the past and now you have services like bitc.hute (no steam, bitchute is not a swearword, lol) and d.tube emerging. YouTube would have a full monopoly if it wasn't for their customer and content creator adversarial policies. Add a bit more of those inconveniences and Youtube'll just be one of many.

I am aware of that. Hope dies last and hopefully the number of annoyed people will grow, so finally a general 2FA method _OPT-IN_ can be implemented, that doesn't exclude everyone who doesn't want to throw their personal data all over the web using data krakens like google and apple and who also do not feel comfortable giving away sensitive data like a phone number.

Edit: It is really sad that you (plural) seem to have submitted to exploitation.

At the end of the day Valve didn't want to have to do these things, it costs money and pains legitimate users. They were added as a last resort to deal with extremely persistent fraud abuses. It does suck, but it's because people suck that it's the way it is.

What should scare you is the thousands who manage to have their accounts hijacked, which require such security measures to be taken. Remember, a hijacked account doesn't just affect the account holder. Take for example friend requests and needing to have a premium account to send them. Although I thankfully haven't had issues in the past with spam invites, many others were. Adding that 1 security feature changed that greatly.

Yes it is sad (for you) that we don't all share your values, if only we were smarter or more informed you wouldn't be so lonely...

Don't worry – I have the perfect amounts of friends for my liking ;) My problem is more that the majority not caring about important things such as personal liberty, privacy and human rights will inevitably have a negative impact not just on them but also on me. Just like a reckless driver impacts others around him.

Well I can surely sign this one :D Doesn't help a bit either.. It's weird though, isn't it? I can pay with my bank account without PINs or TANs (btw also AGAINST my will – and also unchangeable) up to a amount of.. i think it was 30€. However I can't possibly sell my 0,03€ collection cards because I might be a fraudulent hacker, making a "quick" buck, lol.
