A Free Game for Christmas
Are we getting a free game for Christmas from Steam? Gotten some real gems in years past, like L4D2.

There's literally 10+ games given away on multiple stores each week so I don't know why people are busy chasing Steam freebies. There's usually one free game every week on Steam as it is so this fixation on a Christmas gift is weird.
That weirds me out as well. What's with that focus on Steam?

If other places can give away free games I see no reason why steam can't. Steam being this billion dollar company just smells of greed if you ask me.
So get them for free from there.

I feel a huge part of this stems from people feeling entitled to have it for free on Steam specifically if they use it as their primary platform and getting the free game on another platform inconveniences them.

Easy answer, to a lot of people Steam is like a religion. The ones who complain when a game comes tied to another client, like Ubi Connect or EA Origin. Or is (temporarily) exclusive to Epic.

I can almost see them foaming at the mouth when they read this.

Might also be people trying to get more free stuff out by """pressuring""" Valve by saying: "Others are giving me free stuff, when are you going to do the same? I might spend more in your store if I get something free from you wink wink nudge nudge .

Because they want to have the cake and eat it too.

I hope not. Seeing fox dude cry about not getting free stuff is a good enough gift for me.

Yep, if people want free games then they can go and pay £50 for PSN every year to use basic online features we get for free on Steam and then they can play a handful of bargain bin titles each month that by the end of the year don't even come close to representing value for money.

I think we're very fortunate in some ways that we can use the Steam service and its features for nothing. This is why I cringe when I see someone crying about having to make one piddly little store purchase every year to access the market.

I expect that the games we bought are not disappearing one day like it happened at other stores, where i luckily didnt buy.
That is priority.

i wouldnt count on it , 11 years and counting i use steam, and they only been getting cheaper and more lazy. " free games " are bombarded with prologues which should be under demos not normal free to play, games that are legit trash but steam allows them to sell the games for over $100 when the game isnt worth even $5 , and since these make your own games come out, people raiding asset stores like mad and pumping out complete trash and flooding steam, its got outta hand and alot of tired of the lack of work valve is putting into steam, and since covid hit, steams just got worse and worse.

edit: I do have l4d2 but I paid for it out of pocket back in the day
I think OP is referring to the 2011 Coal Incident.

Valve did this cool thing where you could earn a game, a coupon or a piece of coal for completing daily "challenges" and unlocking achievements in certain games. You could take these pieces of coal and craft them, resulting in either a game or coupon. Any coal you had at the end of the promotion was a single entry into a contest where one person would win every single game on Steam. (there were several runner-up prizes, too) This was shortly after they had rolled out the coupon feature, so it was partly a way to promote and get devs/pubs to use the coupon feature.

Valve had actually purchased a ton of games to give away. Some people found an exploit where you duplicate pieces of coal and a few began buying tons of Humble Bundles that gave out Steam keys, meaning they could create tons of accounts to farm coal just from buying a handful of Humble Bundles for $0.01 each. (this was before Humble changed their rules regarding minimal payments for bundles with Steam codes) This resulted in a handful of uses crafting tons of coal and clearing out all of the keys for 3rd-party games that Valve had purchased and was giving away. Valve, being the nice guys they are, decided that they wouldn't end the promotion early. So, they made their own catalog of games available as prizes for crafting coal. IIRC, they also gave everyone a random Valve game right off the bat.

Here's the official Valve News post about the event: http://store.steampowered.com/news/7040/

Again I see people defending and making excuses for steam for not giving any free games out this christmas.

And people have explained the potential reasons as to why this doesn't happen and what alternatives there are available. All you've done is moan like a child without providing a credible business solution that can supply the demand without obliterating Valve's entire operating profit in one day.

:roguechallenge: Daddy Gaben probably employs ‘em to defuse the demands that gamers be given the means of free-but-not-free-to-play entertainment, eh?

Eh?
