Any village-building games similar to Age of Empires that is more about building than fighting?
I'm looking for a casual village-building game where you can direct the people to gather resources and build your village, but you aren't forced into fighting or survival.

Something like Age of Empires, but without worrying about fighting, natural disasters, morale or politics (those things are optional). You can just enjoy building up your village casually.

Any games like this? Thanks.

Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for a game like this too.

I picked up Banished a while back, but then found that (1) it was very much about survival, at least the way I was playing it, and (2) I couldn't individually control what each villager did so it felt a little weird given I was expecting an Age of Empires like game. Clearly this isn't what I was looking for.

I really loved Children of the Nile, but I don't know how well it runs on modern machines. It's on Steam, though.

Development seems to have stopped on this but it fits your description: http://store.steampowered.com/app/242920/Banished/
Worth the sale price.

Might not be 100% what you want but Black and White is a fun game and still holds up. I couldn't find it in the Steam store page. It is an older game.

"Dawn of Discovery" aka "Anno 1404" is still one of my favorite city builders.
Just turn off combat when creating a new map and you can just concentrate on
the relaxed building of your cities.
