Identify game from before 2000?
Around 1998 I played a game that was similar to Age of Empires.

You build farms and mills and bakeries and you see the farmer carry his wheat to the mill
and someone carries a bag of flour to the bakery and then a bread is placed in front of the bakery. This was all animated in detail. You can also build soldiers. The figures are bigger than in Ages of Empires.

The game was set in the middle ages and I don't think there was much tech research.

These animations were fun, but I don't remember the name of the game. Anyone?

I would say one of the Settlers games, but I don't know. It was an classic RTS not a city-builder?

The Settlers III is from 1998 and has a gameplay like the one you describe, try go to youtube and take a look at gameplay.

Here is a list of strategy/citybuilder games.

I've played most of the settler games, I can recommend "The Settlers2: 10th Anniversary @GOG (Crazy cheap right now)" and "The Settlers 7 Paths to a Kingdom @Steam/UPlay"

IDK about this "settlers", but if this sounds fun to you, then I think you owe http://store.steampowered.com/app/40950/Stronghold_HD/ or http://store.steampowered.com/app/40970/Stronghold_Crusader_HD/ a shot. ;D

Settlers is so fantastic. I have the original one, but you have to play it using DOSBOX and unfortunately the sound doesn't work correctly. There might be an updated version somewhere, by now.

Agree, it's great games.
Have most of the Settlers games on retaildiscs, but this topic and GOG tempted me with Settlers 2 10th Anniversary for €2.89 it's a good deal imo.
Installed it and it seems to run fantastic on my new rig with fully updated windows 10, 1980x1020 and looks just as nice as I remember it.
