In what order should the Assassin's Creed games be played?

I'm wondering what games I should play through first. Also wondering which games I should completly skip. I like to the looks of Black Flag and AC3.

Assassins Creed > Assassin's Creed 2 > Assassins Creed Brotherhood > Assassins Creed Revelations > Assassin's Creed 3 > Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag


after that it really doesn't matter.. once they shelved Desmond, along with the entire idea of a linear continuity to the modern segments and instead replace it with "ohh, you are going to provide us with valuable intel by playing a console in your living room" being the sole part of modern side it really doesn't matter after that point.. nothing from the previous games is really relevant to it at that point
