We had this thread about it...

I doubt as many as 90% games even have a "lead".
Unless we disregard the entire strategy, puzzle, and time management genres. And the ones with customizable or selectable protagonists.
You didn't account (I know that you said you did) for games that doesn't have a protagonist.
Games that doesn't have a story, if it's a competitive multiplayer, without story, the characters you play doesn't count as protagonists.
And Games where you make your character and choice it's gender.
I say it's most probably less than 50% games got only male protagonists.

Well there are many games where the PC have no actual gender, or where the player chooses the gender of their avatar.
Streetfighter. Male or female protagonist? Depends on who the player picks.
Baldur's Gate - Male or Female. Depends what the player chooses.
Rogue Legacy - Male or Female - Depends on what the randomizer rolls.
Look at sports games, like racing, or puzzle games like bejeweled. There is no gender. I dare say the number of games where gender is either chosen or a non-factor may well be equal to the number of games with a strictly male protagonist.
Keep this in mind.
Though to be fair, games with female protagonists have kinda come and gone over the years. But then one has to realize that men/males tend towards different games than women so there's a bit of convention that people generally like to see idealized versions of themselves in entertainment. So if you're catering to a predominantly male demo graphic.. you'll see more male protagonists in there.
And yes that's not made up. While women may account for 50% of gamers that doesn't mean that 50% of CoD players are female. That doesn't mean that 50% of Fifa players are female.
