Edit: and yes, people who click on every link that their Steam "friends" show them, can get a lot of malware and keylogger and virus software, but so can people who surf stupid websites and click on every email attachment
ive had steam for a hell of a long time, and have waaaay to many games. used about every virus protector through the years -now i stick with kaspersky- and i will say Steam Does Not and Will Not contain any virus. HOWEVER, the community profiles and such might try to collect data because they ARE NOT STEAM, so just watch who sends you friend requests and group invites.
Steam is not a virus; it's an online shop and platform. Viruses all all over the internet and it is impossible to pinpoint where they stem from when users online activity is unknown. We don't even know what anti-virus and anti-malware protections you have on the device if any at all.
Low ram, low hard drive space, too many services attached to your startup, could be any number of reasons.
