Steam is not a virus, there's really no need for explanation.

You could show your dad, how many active users steam has.

Steam is owned by a very big, official company called Valve: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_Corporation

He knows that because he has a friend that works for valve but he doesn't know why his computer is running like crap

Even tough it is his fault

Does it matter who brought the virus on the PC? I would fokus on getting rid of them instead. Maybe you get the knowledge to do that and the PC will run better again?

Edit: and yes, people who click on every link that their Steam "friends" show them, can get a lot of malware and keylogger and virus software, but so can people who surf stupid websites and click on every email attachment

honestly the only way steam would "have a virus" is if anyone downloaded a game that had an external download available, but then again steam would use these GIANT letters , warning you're about to goto an external site.
ive had steam for a hell of a long time, and have waaaay to many games. used about every virus protector through the years -now i stick with kaspersky- and i will say Steam Does Not and Will Not contain any virus. HOWEVER, the community profiles and such might try to collect data because they ARE NOT STEAM, so just watch who sends you friend requests and group invites.

Funny how all these PC 'experts' have friends that work for Valve or Microsoft but seem to lack the most basic capatcity of understanding the simplest things.

Steam is not a virus; it's an online shop and platform. Viruses all all over the internet and it is impossible to pinpoint where they stem from when users online activity is unknown. We don't even know what anti-virus and anti-malware protections you have on the device if any at all.

Low ram, low hard drive space, too many services attached to your startup, could be any number of reasons.
Ask your dad if he tries to teach you that invented facts were facts.

scan it with https://www.virustotal.com and show him the results, lol

Uninstall Steam to prove it to him then shove the results right at his face that Steam has nothing to do with it.
