Unable to install a game from a retail DVD-Disk!!
I used that method and it doesn't work - the game went in downloading after 12% disk reading.
People, somebody!! Help me to find out on how to lead to the Steam Devs to ask them 'bout my subject, PLEASE!!

whats the game in question? many retail discs these days don't even have the game on it, just a few stray files and a steam installer

physical media is dead at this point

"Little Nightmares", for example..
The game data is present on the disk!! It doesn't match the last public in Steam and => it leads to downloads at certain points. How to stop it?! I gave the link above and IT SHOULD WORKS, but it doesn't..

some content may be on the disc, but likely not the entire game, thus triggering the download

if the entire game isn't contained on the disc, you have 2 options

1) let steam download the missing files

2) don't play the game

it contains the entire game but the earlier version is present and all I want is to play that one.

I guarantee you that any disk you have of a game that must be registered on Steam, is NOT playable from the disk.

Steam *exists* precisely so that a) updates and patches can be easily transmitted to everyone who owns the game in question, and b) allows them to have a secure DRM.

You might want to google how to use the prior version - but I suspect it'll be something that can only be done after considerable fiddling.

This is not the way Steam works. If you install a game Steam will not let you play it unless it is the latest version. The update and associated download is unavoidable.

1. Insert Disc
2. Activate the CD Key on Steam by the game manual inside the hardcase
3. Start Installation by Autorun DVD
Dont switch this order around, if you start the installation first and activate the Cd Key later, it mostly stops the installation and starts to download.
If you switched this order around remember that you can restart any failed DVD installation.
Even if Steam said first it needs to download, just restart the installation and it works.
Start the installation by autorun again.
Nope, it downloads anyway..

Because that method only works if the files are not outdated.
Still searching for a solution to a problem that can not be solved?

May i ask what the big problem is with just downloading and playing the newest version of the game?
If its just about playing the game without Steam, then i could recommend buying the GOG version.

The GOG versions are without DRM and can be installed and played offline on as many systems as you want. No need to ever for a client or to ever update anything. Just download the installer and you can use that version forever, even if newer versions come out. Maybe GOG would be more to your liking.

The official "solution" didn't work for me despite the game fitting on 1 DVD.

How many more threads are you going to necro?

If you can't install it from the disc, install it from Steam instead. If you don't want to download the game, then unfortunately you're out of luck and will need to download it anyway.
