RPG that are very sandboxy with not to complex mechanics but enough RPG elements to give you a good taste for the genre. Both are very good beginner RPG.
As for multiplayer MMORPG, thats a tough nut. It depends a lot of what you want from the game, mainly PvP or PvE, more gear/level or more skill based and so on.
There are tons of MMORPG so it can be hard to find something you may like.
Also it depends if you want to spend money on it and if you want one with monthly subscription costs or just pay once.
For PvP oriented MMORPG i would recommend something like Guild Wars 2 (which is not on Steam).
You could also try a few of the free MMORPg that are on Steam but most of them are Asia MMO and i dont know if you like that graphic style.
I would recommend trying a few FTP MMORPG, just to see if the general gameplay is something you could like over a longer time. Then you can still find a game that costs money. Its kind of pointless spending 30-40 bucks on a MMORPG just to realize after a week or two that its not your kind of game afterall.
