You can either buy a cheap core key if you want to upgrade your account or just buy the expansion and your account will be fully upgraded. That is if you decide to invest.
As far as crafting and "life skills" go, there are a ton of different player professions you can take part in, although you will probably discover it's often cheaper and more efficient to buy materials than it is to harvest them yourself.
GW2 also has tons of dynamic PVE and PVP content and is constantly expanding. What's really great is the leveling system. It removes most of the dull run here, get this and run back type of quests. It's got an engaging story too. What's really, really great about it is that the content scales. So if you're a higher level than an area, the game scales your level down, so you can still do the quests but you'll get XP and items that are equivalent to your actual level.
There are multiple racial starter areas, so you can do the quests in all of them and you're not penalized for playing lower level areas. So you could run quests with a friend who just started playing and not be penalized and you won't be killing 100 monsters with a single hit either.
Really can't say enough good things about it. I will say though that the legendary weapons are redonk. The gold cost on the market for legendary weapons or the cost to craft them yourself is prohibitively high so if you want one of these best of the best of the best weapons, either pray to the god(s) or break out your wallet. That said, they're not an absolute necessity.
