As someone who's used Game Maker since the Playstation 2 era of games, I'd say give a pre-Studio version of Game Maker a try (e.g. Game Maker 6.1, 7 or 8/8.1), if you'd like. I made a ton of Game Maker games in the past. You can use its own programming method called Drag & Drop, its programming language called GML, or a combination of both.
