It may potentially be file size. I've got plenty of space on my drive, however, smaller installs work fine. The other game I tried reinstalling was 32gb. This update is 20gb. I have also reinstalled another game which was 7gb and that one reinstalled fine.
1. Open the folder where steam is installed
2. Open the "logs" folder
3. Open the content_log.txt file
4. Search for "failed". I found a entry that said
"Failed updating depot 275851 while reading chunk "e8603a78c0d8887c8e729037abcb1c99cf28be0f" (Device Corrupt) (Corrupt game files) "F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\PCBANKS\NMSARC.TexBiomesSCORCHED.pak"
5. Open the file location listed in your failed entry and delete the listed file.
6. Try updating again.
Amazing. This is the ONLY solution I've ever come across to this issue that actually worked.
I've had a few games in my library that I've been unable to update for years due to this problem. I tried absolutely everything others recommended all over the internet, including fully wiping Steam and all my games completely from my PC and starting over from scratch, and all solutions failed. I can't believe I finally found something that worked.
Just wanted to chime in for others having this problem.
Glad I could help. I found one website suggesting this and it wasn't easy to find.
Other than that I must say not many issues with steam for my 70+ games since 2009
This worked! Thank you!
Just wanted to say this worked for me when my civ 6 was stuck! I deleted the one file mentioned, tried again, it got stuck again, checked the log again, turned out there was a second file popping up in the logs. Deleted that one too, and then it worked! A lot more helpful than most guides on google that only say to restart or reinstall :)
I just want to let you know, I've had this issue for the past 2 years with Steam. It's caused me gigantic headaches.. This is the only fix I've found after searching for 2 years that has fixed the issue for me. This should be pinned at the top of the support page because this is a widespread issue for people.. Especially those with multiple systems (laptop + pc with cloud saves).
Thank you for updating the post and letting us know. You're a legend.
Wow. So let me tell you. A few months ago, I was having this issue with a game. As you say, nothing worked. I finally just uninstalled it because it was a game I rarely played anyway. A few days later it started doing it with another game that I actually do play. By the time I was done trying to resolve the issue I had uninstalled Steam (along with a large portion of my game library) and done a fresh install of Windows. Things have been running pretty smooth since then and I mostly game on my Steam Deck now anyway.
Well, just now it started doing it again with yet another game. Somehow, I found this post tonight and this helped me clear the issue and got my game updated. You sir are indeed a legend.
I will just add that if your log file is full of the word "failed" like mine was, you can also search for the name of the specific game you are having an issue with and track down the offending file that way.
Thanks again!
So I looked in the log file, found the "Failed" file (was a german ship) deleted that and restarted and whole patch worked. Thanks again for finding this solution and posting!
