Identify the rules. Become clear on the terminology. Determine if there are exceptions to the rules (weapons that make someone laugh instead of explode, and why you would prefer to use that sometimes).
If there are maps study their layout and the best way to move through them.
Also keep in mind that someone else has outstudied you so just be prepared.
Determine if there are game modes and what the win conditions are. Try to get those conditions met. If its a team game you might be able to do it solo, but until then help your team win. You don't have to take 1 objective simply because its in front of you if you're in a situation to skip that and guarantee someone else gets 3 at once(unless you don't help them).

The best way to learn how to play is to play your way. From experience, you will learn what you need to know. Yes, you can take advice from other people but nothing is quite like experiencing it for yourself
