Is Steam free to play on, or is there a monthly fee ?
Hello, a newbie here, well I'm 66 years old but I've recently re-loaded my AoK/TC, I last played in 2001 and decided to look at some saved games on Youtube to get a feel for the gameplay. Naturally, I came across the HD version and the various add-ons like The Forgotten Expansion and it sounds really interesting and I decided I would like to purchase it.
I do have a couple of questions though and I hope someone will be able to give me some advice, or some links to read. I do not have a credit card, but my son does and he will purchase it for me for as my Christmas gift, but he currently lives a 1000 miles away.
So, can he purchase the game for me and how would he go about doing that ?
This is the version that I would like to have...

Is there a monthly fee, or any ongoing costs for using Steam ?
Where do you all of you play and how do you hear about new games?

I'll ask about things like Trading and what is it exactly, next time.

My real name is Jeff Hamilton, but I'll be playing as penwyn_whitebeard, thankyou for your time.

To use Steam, it's free. However, some games do have monthly fees...such as Eve Online. Most games don't have a fee, though.

EDIT:
If your son has a Steam account, he can buy games, and gift them directly to you.

Thankyou for the info, no he doesn't have a Steam account, he does however have creditg card. So will he have to actually join Steam, he doesn't play any of these sort of games, it's not his thing and quite honestly he's much too busy with work, his familly and such.

You really dont need a credit card. Local Gamestop / Ebgames sell Steam wallet. You can use them to redeem your code and buy anything on Steam you like Without requested a credit card.

Steam is totally free to play on, but if your wanting to buy games, they are a option, otherwise you can try out the demo of a game that should be shown normally on the right hand side of the games store page, other then game's that you have a one time fee for, there are a few titles have a subscription service on them which are for example Eve Online.

There are of course a list of Free to play titles also on Steam that you can just play right away after downloading them.

Check here for free to play titles: http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Free%20to%20Play/

Hi, to buy Steam games without a credit card you can pay cash for Steam Wallet cards at any Gamestop or EB[Electronics Boutique] store in your area.

If you want your son to use his credit card to buy a game for you, he must create a Steam account, which is free. He does Not have to buy a game for himself to have an account.

Once he has an account he can buy a game "As a Gift" and send the gift to you.****When buying a game you have the option of buying it for yourself or as a gift. Make sure he checks the buy as gift box when purchasing the game.

Inorder for him to be able to send the gift to you, you and he must be friends on Steam. To do that, you will first need to know what his screen name is. Then in the top of your Steam window it says friends, click on that and in the drop down menu click "Add a friend". A box will open, type in his screen name and send him an "Invite" to be his friend. He will recieve a Notification telling him about your invite. *****In the top right of your Steam window there is an envelope icon, that is the "Notifications" tab. When you send him the friend invite the envelope will turn green instead of grey and all he needs to do is click first the envelope and then the invite notice. That will show him your avatar with the choices of accept, ignore or block. Have him Accept the invite. Now you are friends.

Next, have him buy the game as a gift. Once he does, he will be prompted to either send the gift or add it to his library. Tell him to choose Send. That will open a window that has any friends he has listed. He just needs to click your avatar and then "Send Gift". That will send the gift to you and you will get a notification[the envelope] that you have a gift. click it and accept the gift. That will place the game in your library of games. Click Library at the top of your Steam window, then single click on the name of the game and click install. The game will download to your pc. You can monitor the download progress by hovering your mouse over the Library tab and choose Downloads in the drop down menu.

*****************When buying Any game always read the system requirements on the games store page before buying! Make sure your pc can run the game!**************

I'd like to recommend 3 games to you. These are great games if you like RPG's and or FPS games.

You can use the search pane on the store page to find them easily.

1. Skyrim Legendary Edition
2. Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition
3. Far Cry 3 Deluxe Edition {I'm sure Far Cry 4 is also a great game BUT, my pc doesn't meet the system requirements} Remember; always read the requirements before buying.

Have fun and welcome to Steam. :)

Edit; I just saw that the game you want is a strategy game. You may want to also have a look at Shogun 2: Total War.
