how to apply discount code to a purchase?

I input a code for a discount that came with a DVD game I bought, and the code went into the steam system for my account, but now I can't figure out how to apply the discount to a purchase

If it was a code for Steam, you probably redeemed it via Games > Activate a Product on Steam; in which case your coupon should've ended up in http://steamcommunity.com/my/inventory/#753_3

The option to use the coupon or not to use the coupon should show up upon adding the item to cart. Some coupons cannot be used simultaneously with a sale.

Yes I did redeem it like that, and I think it was successful because even when I try to redeem it again, it says this account already has that product. But when I click on the inventory, it's not there. What th?
