In fact they do and they do it all the time.
But in this case I was specific and said "message" which implies someone on your friends list. Which is what happened to me, as this friend was stupid enough to get their account hijacked.
Thankfully I am not an idiot but this scam looked really convincing as the link goes to what looks like an authentic Steam login. People see free stuff and unfortunately they fall for it as the allure of something for nothing is too much
Different scam, phishing like all of them of course but not the same scam
If you don't know the user that is sending you messages and aren't sure about the link the user is sending you then do not click on it or accept the message.
Obviously... I know that, you know that but people fall for these all the time and they are getting better and better at making them look legit.
This one redirected to a URL that looks legit at a glance and takes you to what appears to be the Steam login page on your browser.
I wont fall for it, you wont fall for it but it clearly got my friend and this one is more convincing than usual
