Countries that have experienced this change, most significantly Turkey and Argentina, have a HUGE population combined. with this dumbass change now, not only there weren't too many people in these regions that beforehand could purchase games through such platforms with their local currencies already, due to their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ economic situations, now this amount of people is gonna now be even SO MUCH LESS now, that this would even backfire to Steam and the publishers and the game devs and so on.
To sell to such countries with high populations and terrible economies, platforms have gotta try to sell to them at a lower than normal USD price, with their own local currency when possible, so that at least some people in these regions can even afford to buy, and do buy games and other content through such platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, Playstation Store and Microsoft Store, and also publishers themselves that have their own stores like Rockstar Games Launcher and Ubisoft Connect and whatever.
let's say in X country with their Y currency, which has a massive population and has a terrible economy and people there are getting poorer and poorer as time goes by, you as let's say Steam, want to sell games, software, services and some other types of digital content to, and the amount of people who buy games through Steam in that country (X) with their currency (Y) is just no more than 500,000 people (example), and the value of their currency against the USD is let's say, severely low. By making the X country have to pay in USD in their country and no longer accept their Y currency which does have a much lower value than the actual USD value, you're gonna reduce that let's say, 500,000 people who buy stuff from your platform to such a relatively significant low number, that the loss of total customers in that X country with their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Y currency would simply OUTWEIGH the loss of doing business with them in their own Y currency with a value less than their USD value. Now EVERYONE in this situation LOSES, simple.
To have more customers in such countries and regions (and therefor more customers globally) and sell to them in their own currency with a loss relative to the digital products' USD value, is simply much better (win-win) than if you were to force them to pay in USD, EVEN IF SOME PUBLISHERS MAKE THEIR USD PRICES LOWER FOR THESE REGIONS, which the ladder is a total net loss (lose-lose for all) by lowering the number of customers (demand) in these countries and now by having much less customers in these regions and therefor globally, is a total lose-lose for all. You have to also consider that they have to pay more if the price is not in their own local currency, because in these countries, most people just don't have a USD bank account and exchange rate and conversion costs also applies to them and not all publishers would set their now new USD prices for these countries and regions, fair or reasonable, which is just chaos, therefor just shrinking the market there.
Steam needs to rethink this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ decision and even at first, I thought maybe it was a conspiracy to make people in these countries panic-buy games/add funds to their Steam Wallets and then say like, oh, we decided to finally not to do this and would result in again, panic-buying for some people. But no, Steam really did ♥♥♥♥ up and pursued the lose-lose path.
♥♥♥♥ you Steam.
