New to the Visual Novel genre
I don't really know if this is the right place for this kind of topic, so I apologize in advance to that. but i'll put it in here anyway

I'm not particularly new to steam, but i'm new to these forums and lately i've been playing VN's. I've already played good, free ones like One Thousand Lies and Narcissu (planning to buy the anthology this week).

I prefer for them to be story-rich isntead of being purely a dating sim (never liked those anyway), and as much as possible i'd like them to be kinetic, although a few choices here and there can't be bad either, as long as the separate stories are equally good.

also I shy away from horror jumpscares; i can't really handle those. if you're gonna recommend horror VN's i'd prefer if they do it by thrillers and such.

again i apologize if this isn't this place for this thing (there isn't really a sub forum with "recommendations on it)

bump
Steam mostly has oversexualized visual novels, there are plenty of good visual novels online for free, just saying that steam isn't the ideal place for visual novels.

As mentioned, Steam does mostly have a lot of sexual VNs so it might be more difficult to find other ones but I'll post any that I know of.

-This one was fun to play but is a little more of a text-based adventure since you make all choices yourself to affect the outcome. I suppose it has a sort of horror-esque settings but there are no jump scares or anything, it's simply a bit more of a dark story.

-This one was a lot more relaxing but still had a really interesting story. It's free like the last game but you can also buy the sequels.

-Okay, this game is centred a little around romance but the most sexual thing that comes from it is a kiss (and that's only if you unlock certain endings). There are some non-romantic routes to take if it doesn't interest you entirely.

-THIS, I most certainly recommend. Like The Bottom of the Well, it involves quite a bit of decision making but because of that, there are so many different routes and outcomes that you can explore. If you liked Narcissu, I assume you also like anime-type art styles, which is notable in this game.

-I've heard it's good but I've never actually played it. I believe there's also a sequel.

-Corpse Party used to be a favourite of mine on the PSP. It IS a horror game but is pixelated so probably wouldn't be too graphic. There are lots of different versions of the game so I don't know if this is the original, thus I really can't say if it has jump scares or not. The original had a few but none that would come up on the screen or anything.

There's also always Telltale games. They do involve some action and decision making so aren't actually visual novels, but they're very story centric and won't involve as much effort as most games. You could also consider trying Life is Strange if you haven't already. Her Story is also very good but is an FMV, not visual novel. It basically involves watching live-action clips of a woman being interrogated and trying to decipher her involvement in a crime.

I'll update this post if I think of any more.

I didn't think this post would get replies (lol). I've played most free VNs on steam, but I haven't played every suggestion above. Might as well try them. Thanks a lot.

I might try Bottom of the Well first, I really like dark stories to begin.

If I'm gonna look for VNs online, where should I start?

I highly recommend this -

While it has the whole dating aspect to it, its also got a really rich story. I was very surprised by the twists

You've played the all time classic, right?

Clannad

If you want somewhere to find visual novels online http://fuwanovel.net/novels is a good place to start. They don't offer direct downloads any more, but most of the patches are still up and it's a good place for finding/researching what you might like.

http://erogedownload.com/downloads/ has a lot of regular visual novels you can download. However you have to a) go through quite a bit of advertising for each download, and b) do be aware these are obviously of questionable legality as many are now getting proper western releases.
