DRM is why steam exists. Digital Rights Management. Protecting the monetary interests of the IP owners. It was never meant to benefit consumers. If there were any benefits to consumers, they were secondary, tertiary or unintended. I resisted Steam until I could no longer go to a store and buy a freakin game.

It was a game library and launcher. More and more, it a launcher library from which you launch your launcher, to wade through crap to start the game you have already purchased. You and your affiliated publishers prove me more correct everyday.
