How do you turn off "what your friend is playing..."

Often, a pop up window appears on the lower right telling me that my friend is playing such and so game. It often covers up an important part of the screen, like the radar in Mass Effect. How do I turn that off?

Go there and turn off the first setting.

It took a lot of searching, it was on the pop up window rther than the profiles or settings menu, but I found the cog. Steam interface is convoluted and hard to use. It took me 15 minutes to figure out how to add a friend.
