What are trading cards used for?

So what's the point of these cards that we earn from playing games? There are options to turn them into gems or sell them. What are gems?

Gems are used during the christmas event. You can level up your profile with the card sets. Hover over your name then go to badges to see what cards you need or to combine them. When you make the badge you can either level it up again with the same cards or just keep the badge + xp + other random stuff for that game.

One use of trading cards is to get a full set for a badge, emote and background for that game. Badges help you gain levels on steam to get profile showcases and add more friends. Gems aren't really worthwhile for me but some people like to use them in trading or making booster packs.
If you don't want your cards selling them is a pretty good way to go.

I had to watch a YouTube instructional to understand it. And still have no intentions on fully pursuing it or going out of my way to make card sets.

Gem can be made out of any unwanted cards, emoticons, backgrounds, used for booster packs, selling, trading.
Everything is within the Community Market.
