Close don't minimise
When i click the big X in the top right corner steam does not close, it only minimises to the system tray. How can I get steam to close when I close it.

Right click the Steam icon on your menu screen and click 'exit steam'
I know I can do that but thats an extra step why can't i get it to close when i click the close icon. If i just wanted it to minimise i would use the minimise button.

A lot of programs do this, because they are meant to run in the background - like Anti virus programs for example.

Steam's excuse for doing this is because Steam needs to be running for any of your Steam games to work. Closing the window doesn't close the program, but it does stop Steam from using some of your computer's resources (so your computer may run a little better), and also to get it out of the way.

If you have closed the Steam window, there are a couple ways to get it back.

1- You can try to open it again - this will make the window reappear.
2- You can click on the Steam icon in your taskbar's notification area (bottom right of your screen, usually). It might be a hidden icon, but there should be a small arrow to reveal it.

You can also close Steam from the taskbar notification area by right clicking it instead, and then selecting "Exit" from the menu.

It closes for me when I hit the "x," don't know what everyone else is talking about. :bladedog:

Isn't that just Steam's window closing? It should still be running as a background process. :harvunsure:

Otherwise if you try to start a Steam game (from a desktop shortcut and/or it's EXE), you would see Steam launch again - and the window re-appear - before your game started to load.

Go to your tray. Right Click on Steam Icon and click Exit.

I understand all your posts but it would be great if there was a setup option to allow a click on the x to close steam totally.

I agree. I wouldn't use it myself, but I know that a lot of people would - and not just casual gamers.

Exists for Uplay of all things so it's a bit odd it's not an option on steam.

Yeah - that was one thing that I actually liked about uPlay. And Origin has a good feature too: the option to automatically close itself after the game is closed (and the save synced to the cloud).
Agreed. I would like to see this feature implemented as well--I would use it. I just like having control of what a program is doing even if there are often updates etc.

Huh? I don't see what's funny

And nope, it hasn't been changed. Makes some sense though
1. You're only closing the user interface, so that's why Steam still runs in the background
2. If you fully close Steam, it will have to re-open (almost) every time you go to run a game

EDIT: If it bothers you a lot, there are some nice skins for Steam that might make it easier - like "Metro for Steam" which puts an Exit button in the menu, where a "File" tab would be.
