Xbox One or 360 Controller [Update]
I have decided to get the Xbox controller for sake of universal compatibility for all PC games even outside of the Steam platform. But which type of Xbox controller should I get: 360 wired, 360 wireless, or One wireless?

Why only choose between those 2? There are tons of good ones. I like DS4 personally.

Youre better off getting a gamepad than these 2. Cheap. USB too. Logitech controllers are more comfortable and compatibile with many games.
Kind of a biased opinion, as ive never owned a steam controller and have an xbox controller. But the xbox controller ive owned hasnt failed me yet, ive had the same one for a few years with absolutely no issues (compatibility or functionality). Id recommend trying out or at the very least looking at reviews of it online, and then see if you like the feel better than the xbox controller.

I was handed a several year old generic USB game controller, and Windows 10 would not recognize it as a device. One BIG advantage to the xbox 360 controller is that it is reputed to be truly plug and play in Windows 10.

An Xbox 360/One controller are both plug-and-play. As for the Steam Controller, it pretends to be a keyboard/mouse on the desktop and can be customized as long as Steam is open. If you can't get a game to hook onto Steam, you tend to run into some odd complications.

I'd go for the Xbox One controller. Better triggers and a better d-pad, overall you'll probably like the shape of it. That said, if not for the awful d-pad the Xbox 360 wired controller would be one of the best gamepads ever made, if not THE best. Whether you like the Steam Controller or not entirely depends on whether you actually like its touchpad gimmicks and feel like dedicating time to setting it up for every game. I've used both, and the Steam controller just kind of feels weird-- the handles are inverted compared to most controllers, it has an odd tall shape to it, and the position of the trackpad... it really doesn't translate well compared to the Xbox 360/One controllers, whereas the One controller was something that took me all of 20 minutes to get used to with the new triggers and derivative design.

Either way, I'd highly recommend the Steam Link if your bandwidth is good enough. I've had a few annoyances getting Origin games working (I can include a workaround if you need it) but overall the latency is bearable and it feels much better to take advantage of your TV when using a controller.

Why wired, Moss? I have a Logitech wireless keyboard, and I love it. Is there something to be avoided about the wireless xbox controllers?

no

The battery pack. It's a minor annoyance, but I feel the shape is better without it.

Either one is great. Besides, a wired one will drive you nuts sometimes when using a Steam Link, as Input Streaming can be unreliable with old non-Steam games (Dead Space 1 on Origin, for example).

If you want to do wireless at all - I'd reccomend PS4 controller (DS4) you do not need a special dongle - just bluetooth can work with it (I even use it on my android tablet :P). It is also most versatile, with the touchpad and sensitivity and gyros

Thanks for all of your help. I've decided to buy an Xbox controller because I will want to play games on other platforms such as EA Origin in the future. Steam controller is only compatible with Steam games whereas the Xbox controller is universal (unlike others that need emulator). But now I am in another dilemma: Xbox 360 wired or Xbox One wireless?

Highly rated and you can probably pick it up at your local Gamestop if you have one. I use it myself. It's plug and play and it's far better than any Logitech controller I've ever played with.

I use an Xbox One Wired controller myself (it's the Mirror's Edge Catalyst version, I like the design with the white color scheme and red logo, if you look closely you can see all the untextured buildings faintly).

I'll go ahead and say to pick up the One controller. It really did improve on previous designs, with a wider trigger and the Guide button pushed where it won't be a problem. I miss the fact that it no longer indicates player count (the Xbox 360 gave you a quarter of the ring depending on which player you were, with the console itself lighting up as well). Still, I'd say it's worth it for the design improvements, and I like the feel of it more overall.

Another important bit: the headphone jack on the controller is no longer proprietary, any 3.5mm headphones will do. Not sure if that's a big deal for you since you can probably just plug into your computer anyway, but it's nice to know if you intend to use a console.

That's another thing; if you know anyone who has an Xbox One, the One controller has no problem going to a friend's house and plugging in or syncing. I've played a fair amount of CoDIW and Halo MCC on my own controller, despite buying it for my computer, and it feels identical on both platforms.

The real reason why the Xbox 360 controller remained more popular is because it was $50 and didn't do ENOUGH to improve, and depending on the price, there's no reason not to go for the newer model.

If you're interested in the one I mentioned (be warned, it's a Wired one...)

The cord can still separate, but it will need to still be plugged in as it has no wireless functionality nor a battery pack.

I still have a wired 360 controller from the first gen that works perfectly fine. The grip from the left stick is gone. Other than that, a steam controller that doesn't get used very much.

imo 360 wired, since logitech doesn't tickle my fancy.

Whatever you do...don't use that "other" controller.
