What happens if i buy a shared game?
so I'm sharing games with my bro and I was thinking of buying gmod, but I worry if I buy it my saved maps and add-ons won't be there when I buy it, and my bro doesn't know either. this is the first time I shared games with someone (since I used to use his account before I got my own) and I don't want to loose my addons and maps because I'm working on stuff that took me days to get perfect, and I have too many addons to keep track of. I was hoping more experienced people would answer my question. So can anyone help?

The downloaded files are already on your PC, if you buy the game this will remain so.
All that changes is that instead of sharing the game, you get your own copy, which makes you able to both play at the same time!

Officially, DLC "can't" be shared to some-one owning the base game. But in my experience the files present at a given computer are used even when not using the Family Share feature.

And when you do buy the game, it'll actually be in your game list.

Do you happen to share the same PC? If you purchase a shared game on a 2nd account that shares the PC, it's a nightmare. You will get all of the achievements of your brother instantaneously since they are stored in the registry. It will look like you cheated them.

If you are not on the same pc disregard this warning...

There seems to be a bug in the Steam store. When I try to select Factorio (which a friend is sharing with me), I get into a weird visual loop in which I see a Factorio splash page for a half-second, then most of the stream window goes blank, then repeats.

esotericka, do you have the game already installed? Or perhaps a Demo-version? Un-install them completely and try again. If that fails, ask your friend to stop sharing with you (for a day) and try oncemore. Indeed sharing and/or having a demo-version installed can sometimes cause trouble when buying.

Is am uninstall-reinstall going to lose my saved games?

For most games you would lose them, yes. You can make aback-up if you know where to look. Some game-saves are installed in the games installation directory. Other games save to somewhere in the "My Documents" folder. This can be under the publishers or under the games name, or it can be My Documents -> My games -> publisher/game.
