Chat window doesn't open on message reciept
I'm having an issue that just started recently (I guess since one of the last couple of client updates) whereby the Steam chat window doesn't open automatically when I receive a message. Steam plays a sound, and it badges the dock icon with a notification, but nothing appears. If I then go to the friends list and open a conversation with one of my friends, the message will ether be there in the window, if by some chance I picked the friend who sent the absent message, or there in a tab behind the current one if I picked anyone else.

Haven't tested it extensively in Windows (I spend a lot less time there), but I've not noticed any issues there, only in OS X. Is this a known issue?

I've noticed this as well. A friend sends me a message, I hear the sound and the badge in the dock shows, but there is no window that appears. If I'm lucky I'll have the Steam Mobile app logged in at the time and be able to see who it is and reply but it's not working from the Mac.

Could be a beta issue, since I'm running the Steam beta (with the Big Picture support).

I have big picture support as well, but the Steam preferances tell me I'm not currently participating in any betas.

Also a thread about this on the old Steam forums: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2995013

Valve was notified about this as early as 07 Nov. On 20 Nov, I was told that it was being looked into.
Currently, you just have to keep checking the Window menu for anything new. I have found that selecting a window from the dock item does not work.

Welcome to the club :P this issue has been affecting me for years as psyolus said above though out multiple OS installs maybe with valves growing interest in Linux we will finally see a fix. Another issue is the Buttons, when pressing for example the Mail button on the top right the Pop up shows up behind the client which requires you to deselect steam (aka open another app) and click the icon when steam isn't selected. Its also annoying when right clicking from the Library menu suffers the same issue and you have to spam the right click to see the menu or use the method I said before.

I can't understand that after 5 weeks steam doesn't fix it.....
This bug is - really - annoying... Mac users don't exist ?

Thank god other people are having this problem, I thought I was the only one! Iv been having this problem for about a month now it seems....Basically it shows a little red icon at the bottom, but no message box appears, and I have to click on the window tab and select the message box...SO ANNOYING. I hope this gets fixed soon :/

More annoying, I've discovered, If you get invited to a group chat, then opening the message window doesn't show who it came from, so short of going through asking all ouf your friends, there's no way of finding out who it came from.

I just put the link of this thread directly in the big picture group.
Maybe we can get more attention with this...

In the end though, its not too suprising. It seems Steam dgaf about OSX at all, I mean....only a few months ago they finally made it so scrolling was possible in the main store....

They have replied to my support ticket with the following "possible" solution:

If you are using a Mac, please follow the instructions below.

Please exit Steam and go to the folder Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steam

Delete all of the files in this folder except for SteamApps.

Restart your computer.

Launch Steam and re-test the issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

Note: If you are using Lion please do the following to enable your Library folder:

1. Open Terminal
2. Type chflags nohidden ~/Library
3. Close Terminal

You should see the Library folder available through the Go menu on the menu bar while holding down the option key.

If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam:

It didn't work for me. Someone please try it and see if it works.
