First of all, steamOS is not released yet -- for now on I recommend you to get Ubuntu - one of the most popular linux-based OS, which is fairly easy to use.
Assuming you already have Windows installed:
The simplest [but far from best] solution, would be to get Ubuntu installer for Windows. You just double-click an exe file and folow the instructions. End result- you would have OX on your first partition, and Windows+Ubuntu on your bootcamp partition. Ubuntu would be started by default when you choose bootcamp startup disk.
>Download link[www.ubuntu.com]
>More info[www.ubuntu.com]
Advantages: Really easy installation
Disadvantages: Two operating systems on one partition, meaning that useless Windows takes disk space.
Second option is to make clean installation from DVD/USB. You didnot specify, which Mac you are using, but I guess that you do have DVD reader.
>Download Ubuntu ISO from their official website[www.ubuntu.com]
>How to burn Ubuntu ISO to DVD on OS X[www.ubuntu.com]
Leave DVD disk with Ubuntu inside your drive and restart to Bootcamp. Something like "press any key to boot from CD" should appear -- do that. Installation process is straightforward, but you would need to format your Bootcamp partition, dont delete and recreate it.
End result- OS X on your first partition, Ubuntu on Bootcamp partition. To boot Ubuntu you would need to select Bootcamp drive when starting up your computer (Just like you are loading Windows right now).
It is if you're installing it without a hard disk. If the ISO is corrupted then there is no way to retrieve the memory unless it is installed correctly. It is default for Macs to start with Bootcamp when it is first installed. If it isn't installed correctly it will probably say "Error. No bootable device. Press any key" Most Macs set firmware passcodes when a firmware is installed without a disk. If you try and switch to Mac OSX, a padlock image will appear and you will have to install a long passcode that only Mac Tech Support knows. Trust me, it happened to me once.
but do you lose all things you had on os x like music apps photos etc
Ive just googled for this issue and apparently under specific conditions that might happen, excuse my ignorance. However from what I have found the reason for this is due to "back to my mac" glitch [should not worry about that anymore as it is replaced by icloud] or if you have previously installed firmware password yourself.
I dont think this should be a concern anymore.
