Bootcamp/Linux/Steam OS
I have used Steam via Bootcamp and run it in Big Screen mode to my TV.

What I'd like to know is how to use a Bootcamp partition to run Linux/Steam OS.

I once heard of someone triple booting but I don't want to do that, I'd rather just not use Windows. Is it as simple as creating a partition and installing the chosen OS?

One thing to note, I have a fusion drive.

Thanks in advance.

Um, just curious why not use Big Picture mode in the Mac Steam client? Pair with an Apple TV and you should be able to do it over airplay even.

Hi.
First of all, steamOS is not released yet -- for now on I recommend you to get Ubuntu - one of the most popular linux-based OS, which is fairly easy to use.
Assuming you already have Windows installed:

The simplest [but far from best] solution, would be to get Ubuntu installer for Windows. You just double-click an exe file and folow the instructions. End result- you would have OX on your first partition, and Windows+Ubuntu on your bootcamp partition. Ubuntu would be started by default when you choose bootcamp startup disk.
>Download link[www.ubuntu.com]
>More info[www.ubuntu.com]
Advantages: Really easy installation
Disadvantages: Two operating systems on one partition, meaning that useless Windows takes disk space.

Second option is to make clean installation from DVD/USB. You didnot specify, which Mac you are using, but I guess that you do have DVD reader.

Leave DVD disk with Ubuntu inside your drive and restart to Bootcamp. Something like "press any key to boot from CD" should appear -- do that. Installation process is straightforward, but you would need to format your Bootcamp partition, dont delete and recreate it.
End result- OS X on your first partition, Ubuntu on Bootcamp partition. To boot Ubuntu you would need to select Bootcamp drive when starting up your computer (Just like you are loading Windows right now).

Since Bootcamp is optimized for Microsoft Windows, it would be difficult to run another OS. I do not recommend this if you are not sure of what you are doing. You could potentially lock yourself out with a firmware passcode, or lose half of your memory by installing a corrupted ISO file.

Nah, i wouldn't called bootcamp 'windows optimized'. They just provide the neccesary drivers. Linux will run just as great. If you already have windows on it, and are happy with the disk partitions, all you have to do is insert the SteamOS disk (when it's released, obviously) and select it to use the Windows partition.

Not possible.

It is if you're installing it without a hard disk. If the ISO is corrupted then there is no way to retrieve the memory unless it is installed correctly. It is default for Macs to start with Bootcamp when it is first installed. If it isn't installed correctly it will probably say "Error. No bootable device. Press any key" Most Macs set firmware passcodes when a firmware is installed without a disk. If you try and switch to Mac OSX, a padlock image will appear and you will have to install a long passcode that only Mac Tech Support knows. Trust me, it happened to me once.

Ive just googled for this issue and apparently under specific conditions that might happen, excuse my ignorance. However from what I have found the reason for this is due to "back to my mac" glitch [should not worry about that anymore as it is replaced by icloud] or if you have previously installed firmware password yourself.
I dont think this should be a concern anymore.

We shouldn't make this any scarier than it is. Dual booting between OSX and Linux is very common and besides some rare issues like described above there should not be any concern as long as you're cautious (don't replace your OSX installation, dummy!)

I would like to know this as well. Have been researching a little bit but can't find anything on it.
