Dota 2 runs in Wine but not Natively on Mac
I have been running Dota 2 through wine for over a year and a half now. I have minimal issues with this, and it has been great playing, but I have been dying for the OS X release of Dota 2. Now, they put out the OS X version, and they say you have to run Lion, have 4gb of memory, and have an NVIDIA 320m video card. When I go to run the game in steam, it says the following:

Error

Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glDrawRangeElementsBaseVertex'! Either your video card is unsupported or your OpenGL driver needs to be updated.

I am running an NVIDIA 9400m, so I understand that it is the older version of the video card that they want you to run, but it makes no sense to me that I can run Dota 2 through Wine but am not able to natively. One would think that running Dota 2 through wine would be more resource intensive.

Any suggestions or ideas to get this running natively?

(Please no flaming or sarcastic remarks about buying a new Mac. I am looking for actual advice, please.)

I'm running into the same error message. I run bootcamp and can play Dota 2 in Windows 7, have for over 8 months, but I get the same error when trying the Dota 2 Test in Mac.
"Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glDrawRangeElementsBaseVertex'! Either your video card is unsupported, or your OpelGL driver needs to be Updated.

I'm running OSX 10.6.8, with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512mb with 8 GB ram. I just ran a software update, and restarted, but it didn't fix it.
I've got the same problem as joelwscott. Seems to be a common problem. I wonder how to fix?

As you can see, the extension ARB_draw_elements_base_vertex was added in 10.7 Lion to the legacy profile which Valve is using for their backend for DirectX -> OpenGL converter.

On OS X drivers are integrated into the OS versions. The only way to get a driver that supports this extension is to upgrade your operating system. Even then, I'm not positive that it will work as the 9400m is a very old card and NVidia may have stopped updating the drivers for them in subsequent MacOS X driver releases. I tried to find out, but was unable to locate it online.

Honestly, you guys should upgrade your operating system anyways (it's only $20). You're holding back adoption of the newer CORE profile which supports OpenGL 3.2 on 10.7 and 10.8 and OpenGL 4.1 on Mavericks (10.9).

The reason that you're able to run in Parallels/Bootcamp is that you are using Window's drivers for your graphics card. The Windows drivers are a lot more optimized/tested than the drivers that are put into OS X. They also tend to have better support for older hardware like the 9400 for including more up-to-date extensions and features. Even on Windows, hardware manufacturers stop updating the drivers for the hardware eventually. It just happens a lot more quickly on the OS X side of the equation.

Honestly, the native OS X version of DOTA 2 is still rough and not ready for prime time. Hopefully, by the time they release it proper some of the bigger frame rate issues have been fixed. As currently, people are getting better frame rate through parallels than with the native client.

Thanks Ferazel, it is good to know how to fix it, if a touch expensive for a free game I can otherwise play.

Hopefully this will be fixed at some point. I'm not upgrading to an operating system that runs worse and gives me worse battery life just to avoid having to switch partitions to play dota.

I heard that Lion is a bit slower, but Mountain Lion is the latest available right now and it's a little better. Not sure if I update myself just for Dota though, because Snow Leopard (10.6.8) has always served me perfectly until now and Apple is going to release Mavericks (10.9) soon...

Thanks Ferazel for the explanation and I'm glad to find other people who know about Ferazel's Wand!

Dota 2 runs just fine on Mountain Lion for me. I'm using a "13 2013 MacBook Pro with Intel HD Graphics 4000 (I know, lol ;P), 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3, and a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5. I've had no problems with it so far.
