It may be time for an OS upgrade. I can't find a fix to Error Code -36 anywhere (it appears no one has visibily had this before,), so my recommendation is if your computer can handle it, update to 10.10.

I found a solution myself apparently:

Step 1: Move cursor over the downloaded "steam" file
Step 2: Ctrl+Click the file
Step 3: When the option box pops up, look for and click on, 'Compress Steam'
Step 4: When Step 3 is completed a .zip file should appear on the desktop
Step 5: Double-click the .zip file
Step 6: Open the new Steam program/icon that was created by doing Step 5 (assuming you did)
Step 7: Enjoy Steam! (optional depending on your personal preference)
