xbox elite II controller, macbook pro m2
Steam itself recognizes the controller. I'm able to navigate big picture mode with it. However, when I try to play games it doesn't seem to register at all with one exception. To the Moon and even that game it's all wonky and only recognizes the directions and not key presses. Controller works great with all games on Apple Arcade and all games except Indivisible on GOG.

I thought maybe I could use the old 360controller driver but that just made things worse so I uninstalled it. The controller is fully supported according Apple themselves.

Any ideas on what to do or am I stuck waiting on steam to do something?

side note: I have a PC and xbox series s for gaming at home so it's not a huge deal but I'd like to game on steam when I'm travelling.

Sad to hear…
Got any other controllers? Xbox, Sony Dual Shock, Stadia working fine here, even wireless (at least since a few weeks, before only when connected with cable)

M1 MacBook, Ventura 13.2.x (scared to update to 13.3 ;-) )

Good luck!

I had no idea that it was possible to use controllers for a Mac. But according to your post, it seems like it's not.
It's a head-scratcher when Steam gets along with the controller for navigation but throws a fit during actual gameplay.
Ditching the old 360controller driver was a smart move; it often complicates things more. Now, the key might be in the controller settings within Steam or the way your Mac handles external controllers.
Ran into a similar issue with my Xbox Elite II on my MacBook Pro. Steam was cool with the controller, but in-game - nope, nada. Except for some odd partial response in 'To the Moon.' Just like in your case, it was all smooth sailing on Apple Arcade and almost all GOG games.
So, I ditched the old 360controller driver (total mess, right?). I later stumbled across this guide on Setapp that was a game changer (pun intended): https://setapp.com/how-to/how-to-play-xbox-on-a-mac . It's not just about connecting the controller but also tweaking some settings to get it fully responsive in games.

I am having the exact same issue and I've tried a Dual Shock, Dual Sense and Xbox One controller all with the same result. I can navigate Steam with no problems but in game it is a complete failure. The games even recognise the controller is there but it just does not work except for one game. Disco Elysium.
I've tried every tutorial and hint and tip to no avail. It's like the Macbook is somehow overriding the gamepad and reverting to keyboard/trackpad. At my wits end with it. A lot of the games I've bought are crap on keyboard and mouse.
