EXTREMELY SLOW DOWNLOADS
Hi, I just got steam fairly recently for my early 2011 MacBook Pro, and whenever I try to download a game, it takes days for it download because it's peak is about 280 KB/s. I have a good amount of free memory on my Mac, and I've checked to make sure it's not a problem with my computer, so I'm assuming the problem roots from Steam. Does anyone have any tips on how I can speed up my download rate? I already tried changing my download server, that doesn't seem to help either...

Are you sure you've turned off the download restrictions in the downloads preference pane?

Go on speedtest.net and post your results.
Free memory and mac specs have absolutely nothing to do with download speed.

That makes everything quite clear - your Internet service provider is the bottleneck. If you want to get faster downloads you need to speak with them.
From my experience, steam servers are capable of giving you stable 8000 KB/s.

I know this is over a year old but maybe one of y'all can help. I have good connection speed, well, relatively, up to 3/5 mb/s (that's good to me, ok), but I can't download anything from Steam. It won't download. It says it is and for the first few seconds it may get up to 500kb/s but then drops swiftly to 0. Always. I have no restrictions, tested my speed through that site and it's all good at 3.5 so it's not my provider. I changed where to download from but still it's stuck at 0kbs/s. And I remember why I NEVER buy anything from steam because it hates me. Any suggestions because I stupidly bought a game I wanted to play forgetting the download issues. I really want to play it and I'll be darned if I just wasted money.
