Mac.OS.X Uninstall Steam without unistalling games?

I am attempting to troublestoot an "application already running" message that has been occuring since both my game, This War of Mine, and Steam updated. The message keeps popping up but the game is not playing. I tried verifying the integrity of the game cache, but it said my game was fine and the problem was not fixed. One forum I read suggested to unistall and reinstall Steam, but I do not want to re-download the game unless absolutely necessary because I want to save on bandwidth.

Is there a way to unistall Steam without uninstalling the game on a Mac? I have found a couple forums on the topic but they were either Windows specific or not comprehensive enough to follow. Some forums also specified a "steamapp" folder which I cannot find and think is Windows specific.
