Hello,
Thank you for your message to the Steam Support Team. External hard drives are not recommended for use with Steam or Steam games. Aside from many potential performance issues, external hard drives can connect and disconnect from the computer at inconvenient times as part of their normal operation. If you're having this problem with an external hard drive, install Steam and your games on an internal hard drive instead.
I replied now:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have always used external hard drives with Steam and have never had any problems with them.
I use fast SSDs. In addition, the internal memory of my end devices is limited.
Due to an update, it is no longer possible to install or move games to an external hard drive. This only came about with your last patch. Before that there was never a problem.
Many Mac users have limited internal storage, especially on mobile devices.
It can't be the solution to tell all Mac users now (see links to forum) that they can no longer use Steam?!
Kind regards
P.S.:
If I have the wrong contact person in you, please forward my ticket to the appropriate department.
You could add your info to this bug report: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/5154944131334849024/ .
They specify exFAT as the file system in the title, so if you post there best to include your drive's file system if it's not exFAT.
what sort of a "solution" is this that install them on internal hard drive
