Short version:
This hang might be before it logs in, and there is a bug where the Mac client's normal quit function doesn't work prior to login. (At least on Mojave, but Mojave's been working fine otherwise).
Detailed version:
There is a bug with my Steam Mac app where it cannot be quit normally before logging in. The top dropdown menu's quit function doesn't work, and the dock icon's quit option doesn't work. It can only be quit by clicking the red dot on the login pane.
However, that login pane has not been showing up for me a lot recently. I am loathe to force quit in case its working on something, so I reboot my computer instead, which lets it finish whatever its doing.
Keep in mind though, this might be because I'm still using Mojave, which is now unsupported.
PLEASE NOTE:
If you are using a supported Mac system and those quit functions still don't work at the login window, please report it with a new thread (they won't take bug reports from a Mojave user I'm sure.) Maybe test it with your safe boot if your normal boot never works. (My normal boot works sometimes but not always.)
Just tried force quitting on mine. Apparently that does work (sometimes).
What Mac OS version are you running, retro? If its above Mojave, maybe we can get a proper report in.
Currently running Monterey but keeps prompting to upgrade to Sonoma so may wait till after I've done that upgrade before dropping in a report
It seems Mac-wide then.
Please report it, even if the highest OS doesn't have it, its a problem for most users.
I'd be wary about Sonoma for a lot of things, I've heard.
For example, "if mac has an iris pro GPU, avoid sonoma like plague."
Got that from a Blizzard forum. It also says AMD should be fine but also that there's no gain for AMD users.
