problem downloading mac steam app

Hi ,just signed up to steam,bought game but having difficuty download /upgrade steam app
cant get from steam site . and when one i've managed to download wont upgrade
have permitted through firewall,keeps asking to ensure connected to internet ??
any help would be great thnx
