steam says I only have 4GB in my folder but I know my computer has a bunch of free space what is going on

I tried to download Portal 2 but steam stopped me because I didn't have enough space I know my computer has a ton of free space but when I looked at the folder sizes it said I only have 4 GB in each one

How big the drive, and how much free space?

Do note Portal 2 is 12GB.

Try add a new library folder with Steam. Steam Settings > Download > Content Libraries.
In the Steam libraries window that appears you can also repair any folders it already detects, by right click a folder in that window.

So under Steam settings / preference whatever you call it on Mac, click on downloads, and should have button called Steam library folders, click it, and now you should see a new box, and see your drive, right click, or I think it was double click ot something as I don't use mac, to bring drop menu on it, click repair.

i don't have anything downloaded on steam. it says i have 0mb used and 4.33gb free space.
i can't repair it because i don't have anything on it

I'm sorry, the drive only has 4.33gb free space that correct?
