1. Enable Steam Input for Xbox controllers
2. Enable Steam Input for generic controllers
I am not home to double check my configuration but I suspect one of those "should" help.
20th anniversary Xbox controller not mapping correctly.
Maybe there is a better place for this but I am at a complete loss.
I received this 20th anniversary Xbox controller a few years ago as a Christmas gift, and haven’t really put it to much use in the years since I received it. It is still in new condition I would say as there is no stick drift, the controller is still clean and buttons all feel great. I am not hard on my controllers anyway. I believe that it was working previously. Maybe I had only ever done wired connections but alas I tried both options and both don’t seem to work.
Basically the issue I’m having is that when I play any games on steam, the controller buttons aren’t mapped correctly or don’t work at all. For example, I launch GTA III and my right joystick is unresponsive, and my B button is A, A is B and some buttons don’t work all together. So I go to map my controls in steam big picture (thinking that maybe they’re just incorrectly mapped in game) and I press A to map it and it’s saying I’m pressing the right trigger, then I go to map X and it won’t even press. It legit won’t even map for like 1/4 of the buttons.
I then find a bunch of 5-6 year old Reddit posts and Xbox forums talking about the same thing and relating it to steam beta settings that no longer exist. One of the articles said to go to a Xbox controller button mapping website to basically update the controller with the proper buttons. They said if you go and test your buttons they will appear correct and you will go back to steam and it will magically work. The button presses appeared correct on the website including the pressure and everything, but I open steam and it just won’t map them.
I have tried everything I can think of within the controller options to get it to properly read including the Xbox controller download thing. I’ve tried disabling steam input, nothing seems to work. I use the controller on my game pass ultimate titles and they work flawlessly.
1. With the controller working perfectly on any Xbox app games.
2. With the button presses being perfectly accurate on the button mapping website.
Based on the above statements I believe this may be a steam compatibility issue.
This is the EXACT issue I am having!!! Maybe one button on the controller will work, I can't seem to map anything anywhere, I can't do diddly,
Pondering if using a PS4 controller will work any better :(
I am going to try completely uninstalling steam and reporting back if it works.
For some reason, the only game I have in Steam that the controllers work with is Firewatch. I have tried three other games (Stanley Parable Deluxe, Oxenfree, and Afterparty). None of those will work no matter what I do. With Oxenfree, the left joystick is the only thing that has any input response. Nothing else works at all within any of those games. If I open the Steam overlay or the big picture menu while in game, the controllers are responding just fine.
I have tried all of the suggestions from other threads (making sure that the games and steam are added to accessibility and bluetooth in the OS system settings). Does anyone have any clue how to fix this?
Honestly have no clue, I was thinking its a bug with steam software. My controller works perfect on Xbox App for windows. I dont know how to report bugs to valve tho.
